REVIEWS OF Deer Park

What our residents have to say

This actually is my 2nd review of Deer Park! (The first one was written after we’d toured it, but before my dad moved in.) Deer Park is a great place and also reasonably priced! The people (both the staff and the residents) are genuinely friendly and have gone above and beyond to help my dad, who has very significant vision loss from glaucoma, feel welcome and at home. He is very happy at Deer Park and that is saying something, as he is a bit of a curmudgeon (and pretty socially awkward). Again and again, I have seen staff members go above and beyond to assist him and to do so with a kind attitude! I 100% recommend Deer Park, which also has activities, outings, a van for errands, a library and a nice garden right off of the dining room! Also, they have live entertainment, which when we were there, consisted of a singer who was really excellent. One last thing, a very nice breakfast, lunch and dinner menu (and snacks) are available in a restaurant-like setting (this is included in the monthly fee), but if a person is not feeling well, the kitchen will bring meals to a person’s apartment.

I have been at Deer Park Retirement Community for almost 4 months now. I am very happy that I moved here after doing my research. Staff are very friendly. Dining room offerings are good and often very good. Staff is committed to residents being heard and resident needs being met as much as possible. The staff does listen very well to questions and ideas and does a very good job even in complicated.situations. Anyway, the amenities are extensive, and much appreciated. It's also pet friendly, which is a plus. Residence are never made to feel like an interruption or in intrusion, because staff realize we are the reason that they are here. Staff and management share information they are given by Bend Corporate office when they are given it.

My husband and I accompanied my dad on a tour of Deer Park. This review is about Deer Park, but it's also about Lance, our guide, who is such a warm, honest and genuine person and I hope that Deer Park knows what a gem they have in him. Deer Park is located in a lovely setting (which my "city person" father found too "remote" even though they have a van to take you to any public transit and he takes public transit ALL THE TIME), bucolic and yet near to downtown Novato. The studio apartments we saw, while small, were of an adequate size (unless a person is going to be spending most of their time in their apartment). There is a restaurant with plenty of options and one can even get snacks from the restaurant 24/7. Like all independent senior living facilities, "rent" includes breakfast, lunch and dinner, which, if I recall correctly are ordered from a waiter (after you make your selection from the menu) who then brings your meal to your table. (We weren't there at mealtime, but were invited to come back when it was mealtime, so that my dad could see if he liked the chef's cooking). There's a small movie theater, a library, a genuinely sweet and caring activities director and I believe there are cultural outings (you will generally find all these features at comparable residences, but, again, they will cost a lot more). The other amenities are comparable to other independent senior housing complexes that are priced significantly higher. In our particular case, I liked that the apartments have a cord on the wall in the main room and the bathroom (and, I would assume, the bedrooms, but we didn't see any 1 or 2 bedroom apartments) to pull in case help is needed. Since my fiercely independent 90 year old father (who was an academic and is completely intellectually sound) refuses to wear a pendant for summoning help around his neck, this would have been a particularly good fit for us. Lance, my husband and I did our best to show my father that Deer Park would be a good fit for him, but he was stuck on the idea that he could not get into San Francisco entirely on his own at any time that struck him as opportune and for him that was a deal-breaker. I also want to mention that all the employees (to a person) that we met at Deer Park seemed genuinely happy to work there. I have learned from experience that you can tell a lot about a place (be it a retirement community or a doctor's office) from how happy the people who work there seem to be. If staff are disgruntled and act like you are bothering them, that is a definite red flag and not only were the people (and again, I want to be sure to single Lance and the activity director out for special praise) not like that, they stood out for seeming authentically enthusiastic about Deer Park and their work.

Absolutely beautiful facility, loved the view of the hills and the modern feel of the atrium, dining room views were fantastic. I was treated well by all members of the staff, came as a drop-in tour on a day when the normal guide was off, still never felt like I was an inconvenience. The Food was great, of the couple different rooms I saw they looked spacious and open, sharing many of the same views I was so fond of. The community members were great, they all love the place.Very impressed by Deer Park retirement Facility, would not hesitate to move my mom in.

I feel like my grandma is happy here. The place is clean (except where the staff parks is full of trash) we've come for thanksgiving the last two years. This year the food wasn't as good but still good considering it's a huge buffet style line. My grandma had a beautiful terrace outside her room and the view is lovely. There are a lot of activities and she seems to have a lot of friends. We looked around for a place to care for her, this place requires that she have an additional caretaker but still a great living situation

Questions about Deer Park

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Independent Living in Novato, CA entail?

Independent living communities cater to residents who need minimal help or no help at all with their activities of daily living – like bathing and dressing –but do want access to the myriad of benefits and amenities that retirement communities offer. In an independent retirement community, residents rent private apartments or cottages and then take advantage of shared spaces and amenities like walking paths, on-site gyms, and restaurant-style dining. Although residents live independently, some available services provide a more comfortable retirement, like chef-prepared meals, lawn care, home maintenance, and on-site salons. Independent living communities allow residents to experience resort-style retirement for a fixed monthly rent.

What is Deer Park’s pet policy for independent living?

Our independent living communities are cat- and dog-friendly and many of our communities offer concierge services so you can find a dog walker when you need one. We know what research says about the benefits of pet ownership in retirement – and the tremendous role they play in healing after the loss of a spouse or partner – so we’re proud to provide a community that embraces these benefits.

Residents are responsible for pet care, including:
• providing pet food and supplies
• feeding their pets and ensuring they have adequate water
• cleaning up after their pets
• taking their pets outside when needed
• walking and exercising their pets, and
• ensuring their pets are up-to-date on immunizations

Many communities feature dog parks or pet relief areas equipped with waste bags for resident convenience.

Is independent living the same as assisted living?

There is one primary difference between independent and assisted living: independent living residents receive no help with their activities of daily living, like bathing, toileting, and dressing, while assisted living residents need some help. Because of this difference, independent living and assisted living communities are also staffed a little differently. Assisted living communities provide nurses and nurse aides to help with the medical and personal needs of residents.

Both independent and assisted living communities offer a myriad of complimentary services, amenities, and activities that residents can enjoy in their free time. Furthermore, utilities, maintenance, laundry, and housekeeping are standard in both independent and assisted living facilities.

How much does independent living cost in Novato?

Independent living expenses vary from community to community, depending on the cost of living in that region and the floor plan the resident selects (ranging from studio apartments to two-bedroom apartments). Many residents are able to enjoy the luxury of retirement in an independent living community starting around $$4,100 per month. We encourage prospective residents to meet with their financial advisors to determine whether they can afford to move. Many residents find that they save money by selling their home and paying one low monthly fee for all the services, amenities, and utilities they need to enjoy security and adventure in retirement.

Are Novato, CA Independent Living Facilities Licensed?

Because senior independent living facilities do not offer medical or personal care, licensing is not required. For this reason, most independent living facilities who only offer one level of service are not licensed with a state board or department. However, some communities – often called continuing care communities – offer independent living in addition to other levels of care, like memory care or assisted living. Because these facilities do offer medical and personal care, they must be licensed by the department of health. Licensed facilities are subject to periodic surveys from governing bodies to ensure they continue to meet the requirements for certification.
