Spring is the perfect time of year to downsize your wardrobe and get rid of any clothes you haven’t worn in a while. With cold winter days morphing into warm spring afternoons, there is no better time to go through your closet, assess what clothing items you wear often, and which items you don’t. Here at Dunwoody Pines Independent Retirement Living, we love hearing about our residents reassessing their wardrobe to get ready for the new season! Keep reading for our top tips when downsizing on your own:
Sorting your clothes by appropriate season is a great first step in evaluating all the clothing items you have. While sorting, be sure to pay attention to any pieces you don’t love or haven’t worn in a while and go ahead and pull those out and set them aside. This is the initial phase of downsizing and will easily help weed out any of those clothes you know you don’t need. Not only does this help you start to downsize in the first step, but it will then help you organize later!
The next best step when downsizing is to get rid of any items that are too small or too large. Our bodies change over the years, which means that clothing might not fit the same this year as it did last. While you don’t have to try on every piece of clothing you own, when sorting through your clothes, take note of any items you know are not the right size and set them aside for donation. Finding the items that are the right size for you will not only help you downsize, but will often help you to feel more confident and comfortable in what you are wearing. This is a win-win step for everyone!
It is easy for items to get lost in your wardrobe remaining unworn for months on end. Even though you may see yourself wearing something in the future, a good rule of thumb is if you haven’t worn it in over a year, it is a good item to donate. If you have moved to a new climate recently it is also important to think about what is practical for the environment you are now in. Likewise, with the seasons changing, if there is something that you no longer need, and don’t see yourself needing in the future, get rid of it!
Ultimately, downsizing your wardrobe can be freeing and great for organizing your space. While all of these tips are meant to help guide you during this process, our best tip to you is to take the Marie Kondo approach and only keep the items that you will actually use and that bring you joy!
Downsizing your wardrobe can help eliminate clutter and keep your living space feeling clean and organized. An organized space can have a great positive impact on mental health. That is why here at Dunwoody Pines we love encouraging our residents to keep their living spaces as comfortable as possible and will always help them in any way we can.
