Mind-Healthy Meals with the MIND Diet

What one eats can play a big role in memory and brain health in general, making meals an important aspect of memory care. Here at Woodland Creek, we implement the MIND Diet. This is a plan created by researchers at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, after they discovered that eating certain types of food, while avoiding others, may reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease by as much as 53 percent. This plan was tested and the results revealed that participants who most closely followed the MIND diet had a level of cognitive function that was equivalent to that of a person 7.5 years younger. Woodland Creek plans meals with the MIND diet in consideration, in addition to the varying preferences and dietary restrictions of the residents.

Memory Care Therapies

We have various therapy options that are designed to support memory care for our residents. Virtual Reality therapy, which uses VR headsets, allows for residents to virtually visit destinations they have been to. By seeing familiar landmarks, they may recall their time spent there. But they can also visit brand-new places and have new experiences, as well! Aromatherapy uses various scents that engage residents and allow them to feel relaxed, energized, or calm, depending on the scents they choose. We also offer music therapy, where we play era-specific music to bring back fond memories and decrease anxiety.

Intentional Socialization

Maintaining or increasing social interactions is another key aspect to supporting our residents. It proves to have many benefits that help with seniors’ memory and wellbeing. By engaging with fellow residents, seniors are able to strengthen the connection of time and place, as it provides a sense of structure and order to their life, allowing them to better remember their daily activities. Additionally, socialization can help seniors enhance and maintain their focus–they are less likely to have difficulty transitioning from daydreaming to focused states. At Woodland Creek, there are endless opportunities for socialization, including game nights, clubs, classes, events and more.

Health and Wellness Opportunities

Staying mentally and physically active promotes a healthy body and brain–stimulation helps keep the mind and body young! Physical activities help residents avoid agitation and wandering while providing physical stimulation, while mental activities encourage learning and participating in hobbies. We have so many opportunities for residents to participate in, including arts and crafts, exercise classes, game nights, and so many more options–there’s something for everyone!

Life Skills Stations

Another activity we offer residents is life skills stations, which consist of various tasks, scenarios and work that they may have done in their past. Examples of life skills include organizing, sealing envelopes, putting mail in mailboxes, sorting jewelry, folding laundry and more. These activities provide a sense of contribution and accomplishment, keeping our residents happy and involved in our community.

Woodland Creek prides itself on its dedication to supporting residents’ memory for as long as possible, while also promoting independence. If you’re considering memory care for your loved one, we would love to show you all that our all-inclusive, top-notch community has to offer!
