In the spirit of getting fit for Wellness Month, three Sunshine Retirement Living communities – Villa Serena, Quail Lodge and Deer Park – are ready to rumble for a good-natured, action-packed athletic competition they call “the Senior Olympics.”
On Wednesday, August 23, vanloads of residents from Quail Lodge and Deer Park will descend upon Villa Serena in Santa Clara, California, the host community for this year’s spectacle. The proceedings naturally begin with Opening Ceremonies, which will take place on the patio. After the official greetings and introductions in team colors, the ceremonies will be highlighted by a ceremonial torch walk around the community pond.
Following an energizing BBQ lunch outside, the teams will join in several rounds of Beanbag Baseball followed by some intense games of Kickball. Before heading back home, the Closing Ceremonies will feature awards, raffle prizes and, of course, the sharing of pictures and videos.
“I look forward to the Senior Games every year,” said Villa Serena resident Daphne Kennedy. “It definitely helps keep us in a healthy mode.”
Her teammate Gini Townsend agrees, but enjoys competing for a different reason.
“I like getting together with the residents from other Sunshine communities,” she says. “Seeing them year after year is a great way to renew friendships.”
Who’s most likely to win the friendly competition? Well, since the host team has won all three of the previous events, history suggests that Villa Serena will capture the gold for the first time. But one thing’s for sure, you can count all three communities to bring their A-games and lots of good-natured team spirit.
