BEND, OR (April 13, 2015) – More than 2,000 residents from 18 Sunshine Retirement Living communities across the country united in celebration of Earth Day by supporting Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ocean Futures Society. Embracing the philosophy that protecting our oceans and biosphere helps preserve all life on the planet, Sunshine Retirement Living communities set out to make a positive impact for future generations.

Ocean Futures Society’s Global Mission

Ocean Futures Society explores the global ocean, inspiring people to protect it and celebrating its vital importance to the survival of all life. As a senior himself, Jean-Michel Cousteau often reminds us: “Protect the ocean and you protect yourself.” By collaborating with Ocean Futures Society, Sunshine Retirement Living communities champion the value of ocean conservation while showcasing how even small changes in our habits can make a big difference.

Weeklong Earth Day Events

During the week of April 20, each Sunshine Retirement Living community held educational and entertaining activities. Residents enjoyed an “Under the Sea” luncheon with sustainable dishes, trivia games, crafts, aquarium visits, and screenings of “SeaScope: An Adventure Underwater.” Produced by Ocean Futures Society, the short “SeaScope” episodes highlight fascinating discoveries made by Cousteau and his expedition team. Sunshine’s blog, Wise & Wonderful, also featured exclusive Q&A content with Cousteau, giving residents fresh insights into ocean life and conservation.

Engaging Residents and Staff

“This is a wonderful opportunity to leave a legacy for future generations,” said James Matthews, CEO of Sunshine Retirement Living. “Our residents realize the positive impact they can have and are thrilled to share their knowledge with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.” Team members at Sunshine’s Home Office in Bend, OR also joined the effort—cleaning up recyclables and trash near the Deschutes River trail and choosing eco-friendly commutes. As VP of Finance JP Mickelsen noted, “Even simple changes to our behavior can make a real difference.”
