Public Invited to Anniversary Party and Resident Art Show on Saturday, November 14
EUGENE, OR (October 27, 2015) — Five years later and so many life stories, triumphs and challenges shared, the residents of Garden Way Retirement Community in Eugene, OR will celebrate the fifth anniversary of the place they call home.
Moving into a new home can have its challenges, but the residents of Garden Way, together with the attentive staff, have always felt like family and together have created a setting, where friends become best friends, new bonds are forged, and where life is full of activity, generosity and camaraderie.
On Sat., Nov. 14, the 117 residents and the staff of Garden Way will come together for a 5th Anniversary Celebration and invite the Eugene community to join them for an afternoon of treats, artistic triumphs, and stories from the past. Several of the residents are veterans, who served in wars ranging from World War II to Vietnam, and while Veteran’s Day will have passed, they will be acknowledged during the anniversary celebration for their service on a recently installed “Wall of Honor” that displays their photos and mementos from their time serving America.
“Managing the Garden Way community is much more than a job, it’s been a journey where the residents have taught us so much about how to live an authentic life,” said Terrie Powell, who along with her husband, Jim, have managed Garden Way since it opened in 2010. “We are thrilled to celebrate our fifth anniversary with our residents and staff, their friends and family, and hope the Eugene community will join for an afternoon of great food and fun.”
The 5th Anniversary Celebration, which will run from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., is free and open to the public. Appealing to the “sweet tooths” of most, the party will feature an assortment of desserts hand-crafted by Garden Way’s executive chef, Martin Hernandez, including Chocolate Truffles, Mini Carrot Cakes, Cheese Cake Tarts, Mini Key Lime Pies, Mini Pumpkin Pies, and a variety of cookie favorites.
For those wanted a more savory treat, Chef Martin will offer a selection of fresh vegetables and fruit, hand-rolled Egg Rolls with Sweet and Sour Sauce, tangy BBQ meatballs, assorted finger sandwiches, and cheese and crackers for every palette.
Also on display will be myriad original artworks by the residents, some reveling in latent talent discovered during weekly art classes at Garden Way. For Marlene Meatte, an 81-year resident, art helped her from recover from a brain aneurism a few years ago. “Unable to communicate, my art was a saving grace,” said Meatte, who continues to take special orders for framed work, Christmas stockings among other crafty pieces.
Barbara McClurg, who has lived at Garden Way for just over a year, gathered a group of residents, who do “crafting for a cause.” Working together, they make teddy bears, which are given to local hospitals and to state, county and city police to help calm frightened or injured children.
Not to be overlooked, Chef Hernandez will display art of his own, in this case, a stunning ice sculpture in the form of star with a “5”. Hernandez, like the Powells, has been with Garden Way since it opened. “I can’t think of a better way to say thank you to our residents and staff than to share memories while enjoying some sweets and savories.”
