“Superfood for Super Seniors” Event on August 13 Headlines Wellness Month Initiative in August at Waterford Terrace in La Mesa

Event is Free, Open to the Public and Will Feature Nutritionist Speaker, Healthy Cooking Demonstrations and Lunch, Farmers Market and Food Drive for Feeding America San Diego 

LA MESA, CA (July 28, 2015) – As Americans of all ages continue to discover the positive impact of healthy eating on daily living, seniors in La Mesa, CA are invited to a “Superfood for Super Seniors Event” on Thurs. August 13, to learn more about the ways that certain foods can improve their overall wellness. The event will be held at Waterford Terrace, an independent senior living community in La Mesa, and is just one element of the community’s annual Wellness Month initiative. Held every August, Wellness Month empowers residents and local seniors to “Get Informed, Get Fit, Get Restored & Give Back” through numerous wellness-focused activities, inspirational events and advice from informative, expert speakers.

The Superfood for Super Seniors Event, which will run from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., will feature:

  • 9:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.: On-site Farmers Market showcasing a variety of locally sourced foods.
  • 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.: Food drive benefitting Feeding America San Diego. Admission to the aforementioned Farmers Market is free with the donation of a canned good. Most needed items include peanut butter, nuts, canned fish or chicken white meat, canned fruits in natural juices or dried fruit with no added sugar, canned chicken, tomato or vegetable soup, and wholegrain oatmeal or cereal.
  • 10:00 a.m.: Feeding America San Diego presentation featuring Kelcy Ellis, speaking on nutrition.
  • 10:30 a.m.: Healthy cooking demonstration by Joe Costa, executive chef at Waterford Terrace, who will create fresh fruit smoothies from our Farmers Market to share with residents and guests.
  • 11:30 a.m.: Superfood lunch, created by Chef Joe Costa, featuring soup and salad bar, Mushroom-stuffed Chicken with Walnut Brandy Sauce served on fresh Mustard Greens with Yellow Squash, fresh baked bread, and Cheesecake with Seasonal Fresh Berries.
