“Superfood for Super Seniors” Event on August 13 Headlines Wellness Month Initiative in August at  Garden Way Retirement Community in Eugene

Event is Free, Open to the Public and Will Feature Nutritionist Speaker, Healthy Cooking Demonstrations and Lunch, Farmers Market and Food Drive for Food for Lane County

EUGENE, OR (August 4, 2015) – As Americans of all ages continue to discover the positive impact of healthy eating on daily living, seniors in Eugene, OR are invited to a “Superfood for Super Seniors Event” on Thurs., August 13, to learn more about the ways that certain foods can improve their overall wellness. The event will be held at Garden Way Retirement Community, an all-inclusive, independent living community in Eugene offering an array of amenities focused on healthy living, and is just one element of the community’s annual Wellness Month initiative. Held every August, Wellness Month empowers residents and local seniors to “Get Informed, Get Fit, Get Restored & Give Back” through numerous wellness-focused activities, inspirational events and advice from informative, expert speakers.

The Superfood for Super Seniors Event, which will run from 9:00 a.m to 2 p.m will feature:
• 9:00 a.m – 1 p.m : Healthy Food drive benefitting Food for Lane County. Most needed items include peanut butter, nuts, canned fish or chicken white meat, canned fruits in natural juices or dried fruit with no added sugar, canned chicken, tomato or vegetable soup, and wholegrain oatmeal or cereal.
• 10:00 a.m – 1:00 p.m : On-site Superfood Farmers Market sponsored by The Kiva.
• 10:00 a.m : Ellen Syverson, MPH, CHES, NTP, Pathways for Health, Holistic and Nutritional Counseling and Therapy, will discuss healthy eating strategies for seniors.
• 11:00 a.m : Healthy cooking demonstration by Martin Hernandez, executive chef at Garden Way, using Superfoods that are healthy and taste good too!
• 11:30 a.m : Superfood “Eat & Greet” lunch, created by Chef Hernandez, featuring delicious, healthy evening meal recipes using Superfoods. The menu includes The menu includes a signature “Garden Way Bowl” with organic kale and brown rice, quinoa, corn, black beans, Garbanzo beans and grilled chicken breast, with a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese. Dessert features the delicious Garden Way Yum Bar, with nuts, dried fruit and sunflower seeds. • 1:00 p.m : Super Senior Crowning where Garden Way residents will choose by ballot their favorite super healthy senior!
• 1:30 p.m : Food Donation Raffle Winner Announcement

• Give Back: Join Garden Way’s month-long Food Drive for Food for Lane County, and a month-long school supplies drive for disadvantaged children, August 1-31.
