“Superfood For Super Seniors” Event Headlines Wellness Month at Garden Way

Nutrition-Focused Event for Local Seniors

EUGENE, OR (August 4, 2015) – As Americans of all ages discover the positive impact of healthy eating on daily living, seniors in Eugene, OR are invited to a “Superfood for Super Seniors Event” on Thursday, August 13. Hosted by Garden Way Retirement Community—an all-inclusive, independent living community—the event is part of its annual Wellness Month initiative. Held every August, Wellness Month encourages residents and local seniors to “Get Informed, Get Fit, Get Restored & Give Back” through a variety of wellness-focused activities, inspirational events, and expert guidance.

Event Highlights

The “Superfood for Super Seniors Event” runs from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and includes:

• 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.: Healthy food drive benefitting Food for Lane County. Most needed items include peanut butter, nuts, canned chicken or fish, canned fruits (in natural juice), tomato or vegetable soup, and whole-grain oatmeal or cereal.
• 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.: On-site Superfood Farmers Market sponsored by The Kiva.
• 10:00 a.m.: Ellen Syverson, MPH, CHES, NTP (Pathways for Health) will discuss healthy eating strategies for seniors.
• 11:00 a.m.: Healthy cooking demonstration by Garden Way’s executive chef, Martin Hernandez, using nutrient-rich Superfoods.
• 11:30 a.m.: A “Superfood Eat & Greet” lunch, created by Chef Hernandez, featuring a “Garden Way Bowl” with kale, brown rice, quinoa, corn, black beans, Garbanzo beans, grilled chicken breast, and Parmesan cheese. Dessert is a Garden Way Yum Bar packed with nuts, dried fruit, and sunflower seeds. Reservations are required at (541) 228-9819 or via GardenWay@SunshineRet.com.
• 1:00 p.m.: Super Senior Crowning, where residents vote for their favorite “super healthy senior.”
• 1:30 p.m.: Food Donation Raffle Winner Announcement.

Additional Wellness Month Activities

During August, Garden Way Retirement Community will also host:

• Get Informed: Various fitness and health seminars, plus a Mini Health Fair on August 14.
• Get Fit: Dance classes and fitness challenges throughout the month.
• Get Restored: Social gatherings and entertainers, such as Strings of Glory and The Frank and Deano Show.
• Give Back: An ongoing food drive for Food for Lane County, and a school supplies drive for disadvantaged children (August 1-31).
