South Carolina’s diverse climate makes it a wonderful place to enjoy the weather all year-round. However, the summers can get quite humid and hot! We know you and your loved ones want to make the most of life, and even though the days are warm in the summer, there’s still plenty of fun to be had! Our senior retirement communities in South Carolina surround countless entertaining destinations. We would love to share some activity ideas that will make this summer a memorable one!
Do you enjoy quieter, more educational summer activities? The South Carolina State Museum in Columbia, SC may be the perfect place to go. You can learn about South Carolina’s history, culture, and art with the 70,000+ artifacts featured there. You’ll enjoy science and technology exhibits there as well, as you learn about local South Carolina astronauts and space travel. The only downside of this museum is, with so many eye-catching exhibits, you’ll want to stay there all day!
Greenville County Rec Center in Greenville, South Carolina offers a wide variety of summer activities that you and your loved one will enjoy! The center has regular events tailored to anyone aged 50+ who is passionate about staying active and healthy. There’s even a pickleball tournament approaching! A specific class offered that would be perfect for summer is an aquatics class. There are multiple types of swim classes from water walking to deep water aerobics to water step classes. Detailed information about each class is provided on their website. Take a look to see which one seems like the perfect fit so you can stay out of the heat this summer!
You don’t need to worry about not knowing what to expect when you head to the Richland Library in Columbia, because they have a virtual tour of the location on their website. A visit to the library is an obvious choice for someone who loves reading, but this library offers much more than that. For one, the employees at the Richland Library can customize your experience by offering suggestions for books, movies, and music based on your preferences. They also believe in accessibility for everyone and have employed a Books to You program. This program allows you to get books delivered to you if you’re unable to make it to the library.
If you or your loved one enjoy the summer weather and are interested in getting some steps in, look no further than a trip to Daniel Island Trail System in Charleston, SC. Walking in itself is a great way to get some fresh air, but this trail provides a complete multi-sensory experience. Along this walking trail that spans 25 miles, there are 13 different loops that can be taken depending on your mood, mobility level, and preference. You’ll see beautiful forests, waterfront views, majestic birds, and sailboats passing by. Be sure to grab a map before you head out onto the trail, and be prepared to be amazed by the natural views!
South Carolina has an abundance of musical talent. The POPS! orchestra is just one example. This group of 67 professional and talented musicians performs popular music for highly entertaining concerts both indoor and outdoors. From “Jazz in the Park” to a 4th of July Fireworks performance, it’ll be impossible to not find a performance on their current schedule that you’ll love.
Getting outside this summer and trying something new is a great way to make some new memories. South Carolina is rich in opportunities to learn and explore, whether a calm visit to a museum suits you, or you’re interested in an exhilarating aquatics class. Last month, chefs from across Sunshine Retirement Living came together for our annual Chef Conference to cook, learn, and connect with the people who make our culinary teams so special. 💛
From plate presentation and photo-ready dishes to collaboration and leadership, our chefs shared their knowledge and learned from one another. Together, they explored their own “culinary DNA” and reflected on what it means to truly listen to the teams they lead.
Beyond the presentations, there was time to cook side by side, exchange ideas, welcome new chefs, and catch up on life outside the kitchen. Those moments matter. They’re how colleagues across the country become the Sunshine family.
