Known for its stifling heat in the summer months, this eastern California desert gets cool enough in the winter months to really enjoy the scenery and landscape. One of the park’s most well known lodges, The Inn at Death Valley, opens in October, in time for visitors to stay at this luxury Inn and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the park this season!
This stunning national park located in the northern part of the state is a must see during the cooler months. Once the weather cools, you’ll have a chance to see crisp winter scenes and even a dusting of snow, making the conditions perfect for hiking among a beautiful scenic color palette. But check the weather before you go; The National Park Services website suggests visiting The Manzanita Lake and Southwest Areas, which remain accessible by vehicle year round, but warns caution if snow or ice is present.
A booming tourist site in the summer means that waiting until the cooler months to visit Yosemite will provide you with beautiful views and half of the crowds. Many of the trees within the park are evergreens, so you’ll see fantastic plant life no matter when you visit. A classic stop for many who visit California, this is a must on our list for the season.
All of the wine country located in northern California is beautiful year-round, but none quite as striking as Napa. Specifically the area of St. Helena Calistoga is a must stop for families traveling through the region. Here you will find lots of wine sampling for parents, as well as plenty of activities for children throughout. For an alcohol free experience, you can visit Old Faithful Geyser, the Petrified Forest, and the Sharpsteen Museum which are in the area. And with half the visitors of the summer season, winter means it’s easier to get reservations at the area’s famous restaurants!
Additionally, there are always the classic stops whenever visiting CA, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Big Sur, DisneyLand, Redwood National Park, and so much more! The landscape all across the state is stunning year-round, but takes on a special quality in winter that few are privileged to see. Regardless of what you choose to do while in California, it is sure to please your family and friends.
