If you’re looking to spend some quality time with your loved one, and want to think a little outside of the box for activities, give some crafting a try! At Juniper Glen Memory Care Assisted Living in East Amherst, NY, we love crafting and spending time with our residents making beautiful creations.

We’ve compiled some of our favorite crafts to try with your loved one with dementia or Azheimer’s. These crafts are simple to complete, but offer your loved one an opportunity to create something they can be proud of and enjoy a little longer than just one day. Check out our list below!

Painted Beaded Necklace

We love this particular craft for its ease of assembly and wearability. All you need is a pack of wooden beads – consider a variety of shapes and sizes, acrylic paints and paint brushes, and some cord or ribbon to string the beads together. Set up the paint on some paper plates, add a couple cups of water to wash off your brushes, and start working on making those beads beautiful. If it’s helpful for your loved one, try to select only a couple of their colors for them to paint on their beads. Once the beads are dry, use the cord or ribbon to string the beads and create a beautiful necklace. Consider using knots to keep the beads in place – either all together or spread out in a unique pattern.

Floral Arrangements

One of our favorite activities is arranging flowers in a beautiful shatterproof vase. Stop by a florist or grocery store and purchase a couple bunches of flowers of varying sizes and lushness, and bring along a vase or two to meet your loved one for a fun afternoon. You can work together to trim the stems, snip off leaves that will hit below the waterline, and pull together a beautiful bunch of flowers. It can be helpful to check out an online tutorial when starting something new, and we love this simple one for beginners.

Decorate Sugar Cookies

Depending on your and your loved one’s dietary needs, we love the idea of spending the afternoon decorating sugar cookies. If you like to bake, you can bake a batch of cookies ahead of time and bring them along with colored frosting, sprinkles, and frosting tools. Or you can easily pick up a pre-made cookie decorating kit from a local grocery store, complete with cookies. Between using your creativity and having a bite or two of your delicious creations, we know this craft will be one you’ll come back to time and again. We recommend sharing your decorated cookies when you’re done, so other community members can partake in your joyful moments!

Adult Coloring Books

This one is much simpler than the rest, as all it requires is a pack of colored pencils, markers, or crayons, and a couple of coloring books. We love the sophisticated designs that adult coloring books provide, and they offer a little bit of a dexterity challenge which can be good for keeping hands and minds in shape! Check out some of the amazing options out there at Barnes and Noble!

There’s nothing better than spending time with your loved one, and we hope these crafts give you some ideas for spending some unique quality time with them.
