Nothing screams comfort food more than delicious southern-inspired cuisine. From fried chicken to gumbo, Louisiana is known for its incredible comfort food and bold flavors. While we love the flavors of the south, here at The Verandah Independent Retirement Community, we take pride in serving our residents delicious meals that are also healthy and nutritious. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy all of those southern favorites from time to time! Our team has compiled a list of our favorite Louisiana meals that are perfect for cold winter days. Keep reading to see our top picks:

Gumbo

Our top pick and one of the most well known dishes from Louisiana is gumbo. Gumbo is the official state dish of and consists of a hot, delicious stew that is often served over rice. It can contain various meats and seafood and is the perfect meal for a chilly winter day. With several styles of gumbo common throughout the state, this dish is customizable based on who makes it. While you will likely find a similar base in each recipe, there are different styles of gumbo which can change depending on the chef and their traditions. This ability to customize the dish makes it perfect for anyone wanting to try this southern classic, while still being able to add or omit any proteins that you do not like and sub them with another. If you are interested in trying gumbo yourself, we have found this recipe, which is perfect for first time gumbo makers.

Jambalaya

Sticking with classic Louisiana inspired dishes, our second pick on the list is Jamalabaya. This savory and delicious rice dish stems from south Louisiana and is hearty and packed with flavor. This tasty, comforting meal is made by cooking rice, sauteed veggies, a protein (commonly a smoked sausage), in a rich and flavorful broth until the rice is done. This creates a flavorful meal that will heat your taste buds and your soul. Another dish perfect for a chilly afternoon, this is one of our favorites for winter which is why it made it to number two on our list. While we know there are premixed boxes of jambalaya easily found at the store, there is nothing quite like a homemade batch. You can find our favorite recipe for beginners here.

Beignets

Moving towards dessert, a Louisiana classic is the deep-fried beignet. With its roots in French cuisine, it is no wonder that these deep fried pastries are delicious and the perfect treat to pair with coffee after a meal! I mean who can deny that there is something special about having a warm beignet topped with powdered sugar? While it is widely known that Café du Monde in New Orleans is a popular spot to get beignets, that doesn’t mean it is the only option. There are ample recipes for that perfect Louisiana-style beignet just a click away. Our favorite is this one from all recipes. It is the perfect recipe for those of you looking for a New Orleans style beignet in the comfort of your home!

All of these dishes are perfect for those chilly winter months, making them our top 3 seasonal favorites. We hope you give these meals a try the next time you are craving a taste of Louisiana! Our whole team here at The Verandah can not wait to see what our residents get cooking this season.
