Crisp fall weather is finally here, and the cozy season is officially upon us! At Central Parke Memory Care and Transitional Assisted Living in Mason, OH, we love celebrating autumn with our residents. From the fun holidays to delicious cinnamon-filled treats and everything in between, it’s easy to see why fall is the favorite holiday of so many.
If you’re looking for some fun activities to do with your loved one this season, we have some excellent, unique, and easy ideas for you. From pumpkins to cozy moments, we’ve covered them all. Check out our favorite ideas below!
Safer than pumpkin carving, and dare we say more fun, pumpkin painting is a creative way to usher in the fall season. All you need are paintbrushes, acrylic paints, and a pumpkin or two and you have a recipe for a fun afternoon. The beauty of painting a pumpkin is that you can let your creativity fly without risking injury from carving tools. While you can always paint a face on the pumpkin, paint it completely one color, or paint bats or ghosts all over, we are challenging you to think outside of the box. Consider painting a lace or checkerboard pattern over the pumpkin, or even painting an entire autumnal harvest scene across the front of it. Or if you’re feeling a little cheeky, we love the idea of painting it all one color and then painting tiny little pumpkins all over in a polka dot pattern!
For those of you who love to work with your hands, consider crocheting some Halloween decor! We love this adorable no-sew crochet ghost video tutorial. You can even use different colored yarn like purple or green to create a trio of ghouls for decorating your loved one’s home. If you wind up making many, consider gifting them to friends along with a sweet treat for a little Halloween surprise!
There are so many ways to showcase a collection of beautiful, hand-selected fall leaves. From creating a collage with glue sticks and canvas to ironing them in between wax paper, to making an autumnal wreath, we all have displayed our fallen tree treasures before. We personally love the idea of pressing them, leaving them for a week or two to dry out, and then collecting them in a simple glass jar to display in your home. However, in all the excitement of creating something with them, don’t forget to embrace the best part of creating your leaf collection – finding and curating the collection itself! Bundle up, grab some cocoa, and take a walk with your loved one to scour the ground and flower beds for some fallen leaves to scoop up. Take time to identify what kinds of trees you have in your leaf collection. You can focus on collecting only one type of tree, or try to collect as many different tree species as possible.
Some days simply require kicking back with a good book. To make reading a little extra cozy and give you and your loved one a chance to bond, bring out the blankets, the warm apple cider, and some classic stories to read aloud. Reading together allows for your imagination to run wild, and offers a chance to bond with your loved one through food, warmth, and calm social interaction. We suggest picking a classic story to read aloud like The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, Anne of Green Gables, or even a couple of classic picture books for some visual stimulation.
