Homemade Winter Decor From One Of The Top 55+ Communities in Oregon

Crafts to create a cozy and inviting winter environment

Winter can be cold and gloomy, especially in areas known for their constant winter precipitation like Oregon. It can be tempting to hunker down and do little when the temperatures dip, but just because it’s cold out doesn’t mean activities need to be totally shut down! Some of the best activities to do with your loved ones are arts and crafts, and what better way to spend time with your loved one than making beautiful memories and decor?

At our Sunshine Retirement Living independent living in Oregon, we are experts at keeping our senior residents entertained in any season. We’ve put together a list of our favorite handmade crafts to create with your friends and family in our senior apartments in Oregon this winter. Take a look below to plan out your perfect crafting afternoon visit!

Knit and Crochet

We all know someone who loves to knit or crochet, and the Oregon winter is the perfect time for creating a cozy blanket for someone you care about to keep them cozy all season! Take a field trip to a neighboring yarn store for some soft yarns in their favorite colors, or even a yarn with some shimmer to add a little something special! Then spend some time picking out a pattern. For beginners or to create something more quickly, we love this beginner’s guide that offers a ton of options. Or for more of a challenge, we love this interwoven crochet blanket pattern that’s great for advanced crafters.

Snow Globes

For those who love winter weather, magic, and a little bit of glitter, a snow globe is a fantastic DIY project for you and a grandchild or friend to create together. A winter-themed snow globe can include a pine tree, an arctic fox or hare, a snowman, or even a family photo! We love this easy tutorial by The Sweetest Occasion. For the snow, you can use traditional snow globe snow, consider glitter for a sparkly twist, or even add sequins for a bigger and bolder look.

Macrame it Up

Combining the softness of wool or cotton cords, with hearty winter woods like birch and pine, macrame wall hangings have a winter feel that can last all year round. We suggest creating this beginner macrame wall hanging during a cozy afternoon! Whether you pick your favorite colors, choose something that will match the recipient’s home decor, or go with classic white, these wall hangings are beautiful, comforting, and bold. And if you create one with a friend or family member, your loved one will hang it in their room as a reminder of the special time you spent together.

Bring Nature Inside

While the holidays may have come and gone, winter is still very much here. With the Oregon winter comes pinecones, evergreen trees, snow, sweet woodland creatures, and icicles! Go on a nature walk to collect pinecones and evergreen branches to create a small winter wreath to hang in your room or on your front door. Or make it even easier by finding architectural bare branches, winter berries, and evergreen springs to put in a glass vase. Show off varying heights and the different textures for a modern look. By inviting the winter outdoor landscape in and embracing the season for what it is – peaceful, beautiful, and natural – we can breathe warmth and life into an otherwise cold and dull time.
