If you live in San Diego or the surrounding area, you know that for most of the year, the weather is hot and sunny. During the summer months, it gets even hotter which can lead to overheating, dehydration, or even heat strokes if we are not careful to make sure we stay comfortable during the hottest months of the year. Luckily, the expert team at Waterford Terrace in La Mesa just outside San Diego, California are professionals at managing the heatwaves and ensuring that our residents are happy and healthy along the way. These tips are great for all over the country, and we recommend you implement them as soon as possible with yourself and your loved ones!
Starting with a fun one, an easy way to stay hydrated this summer is to make delicious fruit popsicles with your friends and family! Gather your favorite fruits from the local farmers’ markets, corresponding juices, a popsicle mold, and popsicle sticks and you are ready to make delicious fruit popsicles! Get creative and try as many combinations as you like! You can even add herbs like mint or basil for an upscale, unusual twist. All you have to do is cut up the fruit into small pieces, place the stick in the bottom half of the mold, drop a few pieces of fruit in and pour the juice in over the fruit, and stick. Freeze for several hours or overnight, and by morning you will have delicious fruit popsicles you can enjoy on San Diego’s hottest days.
This one goes without saying, but it is so important to protect your skin from the UV rays of the sun to prevent sunburns, sun poisoning, skin cancer, and dehydration. Wearing sunscreen also has added beauty benefits such as reducing the development of wrinkles, moisturizing, and preventing sunspots and uneven skin tone. Wearing a hat can also protect you from the sun should you be allergic to sunscreen or prefer not to wear it.
If you are planning on spending a lot of time outdoors this summer, make sure you are drinking plenty of water. As we sweat, we are losing more and more water from our bodies, so we have to replenish that water by drinking more than usual. You should consider purchasing a reusable water bottle to reduce the amount of waste that you create and encourage more water consumption by carrying around a fun water bottle all day.
We are so lucky to have air conditioning regularly available to us, so we should be grateful and use it when we get overheated! If you are out on a walk, going shopping, or just having a fun beach day, make sure you come inside every couple of hours to completely cool off and relax in the nice air conditioning. Making sure your body does not get overheated can reduce the risk of becoming overheated or suffering from extreme dehydration.
Making sure that we are dressed for the weather is also important. When the sun is beating down, we recommend that you wear lightweight and loose clothing that is comfortable and easy to move in. Consider staying away from heavy fabrics that can cause you to excessively sweat such as knits, denim, or velvet, and dress for the weather with loose cotton tank tops, shorts or capris, and supportive sandals. This can help ensure that you are beating the heat and are remaining as cool as you can be.
Last but not least, if the weather is too hot for you, stay inside! There is nothing wrong with staying inside during a heatwave or even just a really hot day. Sometimes the best way to beat the heat is to avoid it altogether!
Waterford Terrace has plenty of fun activities planned inside our community that will help you beat the heat both inside and outside for the whole summer. Ask our Life Enrichment Director for more information and to see the full activities calendar if you are interested in joining in on the fun!
