Independence Day is on Sunday, July 4th, 2021, and we are gearing up for a fun weekend at The Woods at Merrimack in Methuen, Massachusetts. Are you looking for ways to celebrate the 4th of July holiday with your friends and family? Our team of professionals has come up with six indoor and outdoor activities to have at your party or add to your weekend to-do list. Let’s dive in:
Encouraging brain health is always a priority, especially for seniors who want to stay in tip-top shape. We also love a good competition, so an American Geography Challenge is perfect for our over 55 residents. Consider dividing the group into two teams (try splitting up by birthday, in alphabetical order, or just randomly) and allowing each team to put their geography knowledge to the test! We also love the idea of including staff members and family in the challenge too.
We offer much more than just bingo, but our guests still love it! Create bingo cards with patriotic tiles that represent certain American songs such as The National Anthem, God Bless America, America The Beautiful, or even more contemporary hits like “Born in the U.S.A.” During the game, staff members will play the songs while guests will identify the title and find the corresponding tile on their bingo board. This is a fun twist on the traditional bingo, and pulls in a trivia aspect!
With this sunny, warm weather, we are finally able to enjoy the outdoors for the summer season! Get outside this holiday weekend by tie-dying some bandanas, t-shirts and other clothing items! Since it is the Fourth of July, you could use red and blue tie-dye to create patriotic apparel to wear to our community BBQ lunch! Tie Dye is fun because it is safe, does not require a lot of materials, and sparks creativity for our senior residents and their friends.
Have we mentioned how much we love healthy competition? For this trivia game, create a slideshow of American landmarks and landscapes and separate the group into teams. Provide a way for them to buzz in for their answer. As the slideshow goes across the screen, whoever guesses the correct answer first gets a point. The team with the most points wins! Put together a patriotic prize for the winning team. You can also use the playlist from earlier to have patriotic tunes in the background.
Watching fireworks is an Independence Day tradition that cannot be missed! Head to a local park or community center that is setting off fireworks. Bring a couple of chairs and your favorite drinks to sit back, relax and enjoy the evening with friends and family.
One of our personal favorite Fourth of July activities is our annual Community BBQ Lunch! We will be having lots of great food, music, and activities in store for residents, so we hope to see you there!
Independence Day is a fun holiday full of celebrations in remembrance of our independence from Great Britain. We love to honor our country and are very excited that we are able to celebrate with activities this year. The staff and residents of The Woods at Merrimack wish you a Happy Fourth of July!
