Winter is here, and that means that cooler weather has crept into the beautiful Georgia climate. This also means that spending time outside might not be as appealing to our residents as it is during the warmer months. Luckily, our amazing team at Dunwoody Pines, one of the best retirement communities in Georgia, has put together a foolproof list of activities, games, and exercises to keep our residents active and engaged all season long.

Games

    • Card Games: One of our absolute favorite indoor activities is card games. Not only are these games easily accessible, but many can be played in a group or individually. The ability to play various games with very little equipment makes this the perfect activity for any time of day. Keep a deck of cards in your pocket, purse, or just carry them around and enjoy hours of entertainment with friends or family. If you are unsure of where to start you can find the rules to the most popular games here. Some of our favorite games are:
      • Solitaire
      • Go Fish
      • Spades
      • Crazy Eights
    • Board Games: Board games are another great way to spend a chilly afternoon. Similar to card games, board games are lightweight, accessible to large or small groups, and so much fun. We love the competition and mental stimulation that board games bring out and love watching our residents utilize strategic thinking and tactics. Looking for a game to try this season? We recommend:
      • Monopoly
      • Catan
      • Codenames
      • Rummikub
      • Scrabble
    • Name That Tune: More of a competitive activity, Name That Tune can be played by any one at any time as long as they have access to music and a speaker! The guidelines are simple:
      • The “host” will play a song out loud.
      • The “contestants” will shout out the name of the song.
      • As the game goes on, we suggest making the song selections more obscure and therefore harder to guess.

While there does not need to be a winner to play this game, if a few players stand out you could opt for the top three or five players to compete to see who can get the most out of 10. One of the best parts about this game is that there is no limit to the number of participants. And who doesn’t love listening to music?

Indoor Exercises

We know that our residents here at Dunwoody Pines love staying active, which is why we also encourage them to take advantage of our amazing fitness opportunities such as Zumba Gold classes every other Wednesday. We also strongly encourage them to create their own indoor exercise routines and get active with friends! A few great workouts to try during the winter are:

      • Arm chair yoga
      • Light dancing
      • Resistance training
      • Walking laps inside our luxury residency

Mental Activities

Our last set of activities perfect for the winter focus on individualized mental activities that our residents can use to relax, improve cognitive function, or simply challenge themselves for entertainment. Some of our favorite mental activities include:

      • Reading
      • Brain teasers
      • Crossword puzzles
      • Drawing/ painting
      • Listen to a podcast

We can’t wait to see how our residents choose to keep themselves busy this winter. Our entire staff is dedicated to assisting our residents in having the best experience possible.
