Fun Ways to Stay Connected from Our Independent Living Communities

Maintaining your relationships and sense of belonging

In an age of text messages, apps, video calls, and email, it can seem like we have all the tools at our fingertips to stay connected to the entire world. Friends and family are only a click of a button away, and news and media have a virtually non-existent lag time. In such a connected world, it seems odd that so many of us still feel that pull of loneliness on a regular basis. It can be confusing to pinpoint why that is so, when technology is readily available to remedy that feeling.

At our Sunshine Retirement Living Independent Living Communities, we know the importance of staying connected with friends, loved ones, and our surrounding communities. While we love technology for that, we also think it allows us to miss a key factor in our daily lives: in-person connection. With so many opportunities to stay connected within and outside of our communities, we thought we would list some of our favorite ways to connect with others. Check out our suggestions below!

Exercise Classes

If you find yourself a little more on the introverted or shyer side, it can be tough to put yourself out there and interact with others, as the fear of what to say can creep in. An easy, low-pressure way to connect with others is joining an exercise group or class. The majority of the talking is done by the instructor, and it offers a chance to bond with your fellow classmates through tackling something challenging together, laughing through the learning process, and finishing out strong together. Ask a classmate to join you after for a refueling smoothie or other delicious, healthy snack. Our communities offer several opportunities for group exercise, so get on your workout gear and get ready to get sweaty!

One of our favorite ways to connect with others is through volunteering for a good cause. Whether working in our community gardens on our campuses, or volunteering with a pet shelter in our surrounding community, or starting a volunteer club for your community, when you come together with others to give back, it offers a sense of belonging and purpose.

Book Club

If you are a bookworm, like many of our residents, and you enjoy chatting about your latest read, consider joining or starting a book club. Meeting monthly with a small group of friends to discuss a thrilling spy novel, beautifully emotive historical fiction novel, or hilarious memoir is a great way to stay connected to old friends, and make new ones in the process. When selecting a book for the month, we suggest each person bring a suggestion to the group with a brief summary of it in order to give everyone an idea of what the book is about. Then, vote on the books by making a rule that you cannot vote for your own book. Consider making it a blind vote by writing your votes on pieces of paper and placing them in a jar or bowl, and then having a neutral or nominated party count the votes. Then, give everyone one month to read the book. When you get together, each person can bring a question they want to pose to the group about the book. If you get stuck, many books these days now have discussion questions in the back of them. And last, but certainly not least, be sure to have plenty of snacks and beverages for the group!

Get Out and Explore!

While we love gathering in our community, sometimes a little exploration is necessary. We suggest taking a little day-trip into town with your fellow residents. At Sunshine Retirement Living, we make it easy for members of our independent living communities to commute into the neighboring communities by offering both transportation options and planned off-site activities. It’s an excellent way to bond with fellow residents and to connect with our wonderful neighbors.

We know how important it is to stay connected in retirement, which is why Sunshine Retirement Living’s Independent Living Communities offer so many opportunities to our residents for building a sense of community and belonging. We encourage residents to find connections in ways that suit them best.
