Meditation has grown in popularity over the years as various phone apps have been released dedicated solely to mindfulness, meditation, and mental wellness. As a self-care tool, meditation is incredible for maintaining mental health and promoting a good sense of connection with one’s self. While there are so many books, apps, and videos out there that offer wonderful meditation tips, we thought it might be helpful if we listed some of our favorite winter meditation prompts for your winter self-care routines.

At Heritage Point Memory Care and Transitional Assisted Living community in Mishawaka, IN, we know the importance of meditation for both our residents who are able, and those caretakers in our community. These winter meditation prompts are specifically for our caretakers, but we welcome anyone and everyone to take those meditations that speak to you.

What is Meditation?

Simply put, meditation is mindfulness practice that focuses on the present moment. In a world so heavily focused on pressing onto the future, and holding on to the past, meditation is a chance to connect with one’s self in moments committed to the now. It encourages us to listen to our bodies, examine what we are feeling physically and emotionally in the moment. It’s a chance to slow down, connect with our breath, and center ourselves. When we can live in the present moment for a few minutes a day, it makes it easier to live in the present moment for longer stretches of time. While we recognize the need to plan for the future, especially as caregivers, we often miss the beauty of the present when we are so focused on the future.

Guided Meditation

For beginners, we highly recommend starting with guided meditation videos or apps, in which a teacher walks you through meditation prompts and breathwork. We love apps like Headspace and the Calm app, and we think this 10-minute meditation for beginners from Goodful is a great tool to come back to time and again. It guides you through breathing exercises and is incredibly soothing.

Winter Meditation Prompts

Now to the good stuff! We have compiled some of our favorite winter meditation prompts and broken them up into a couple of categories. These are mantras, breathing exercises, and thoughts to process while sitting. We hope a few speak to you.

Mantras:

  • I am bliss.
  • I am present in this moment.
  • I am strong. I am kind. I am patient. I am here.
  • So Hum – sanskrit for “I am”

Breathing exercises:

  • 4-7-8 exercise: Breathe in for the count of 4, hold for the count of 7, and breathe out for the count of 8. Repeat as many times as necessary.
  • Ujjayi Pranayama – Ocean breathing, which is a vocal breathing exercise and draws your concentration on both the breath, and how it feels within each part of your body.
  • Body Scan – not technically a breathing exercise, but the practice itself will calm your nervous system and regulate your breathing. You can find a guided body scan here.

Meditation Quotes and Prompts

While not technically something to concentrate on during your meditation (though you can use these), below are some simple mindfulness quotes and prompts that will help you concentrate on the present and your breathing.

  • I am grateful for:
  • My life is mine to create.
  • I feel most loved when:
  • I show care and love for others by:
  • Where is my body feeling the most unease?

With a few simple techniques, you can add meditation to your daily routine, and make it an important part of your self-care ritual.
