While winter in Pittsburgh has a tendency to be chilly and encourages most of us to stay inside, we at The Haven at North Hills Senior Residence in Pittsburgh, PA think it’s a great time to try out new activities with your loved one! Take a trip to the zoo or a Victorian greenhouse, or perhaps an adventure to the park on one of those unseasonably warm days we’re not quite sure what to do with. Though Pittsburgh is a huge city and has a ton of fantastic activities, we can’t help but think of a few of our favorites.

We’ve created a list of some of our favorite activities for our community members of our North Hills nursing home to share with their loved ones. Check them out below!

Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium

While a lot of zoo exhibits are outside, and it might be a little cold to visit some of those outdoor animals, many zoos have indoor exhibits that are often overlooked. The indoor exhibits at the Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium offer just as much fun as the outdoor ones! Reptiles can be found in the Worlds of Discovery Building, and the Aquarium and Tropical Forest Complex offer a fun way to pretend you’re on a tropical vacation! With off-season ticket prices to boot, consider taking a short visit to the zoo this winter.

Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

Not interested in animals? Plant lovers rejoice! The Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens are an excellent alternative to the zoo or aquarium. While the grounds might not be as in bloom as they are during the spring and summer months, inside, the blossoms are in full force! Home to an amazing Victorian greenhouse, the glasshouse brings beautiful tropical orchids and bonsais front and center. With bright colors, incredible variety, and even an exhibit on sustainability, the conservatory can be a peaceful way to spend an afternoon, or an educational brisk walk for those looking for a new place to fit a little exercise in.

Frick Park

With over 100 species of birds, a day spent birdwatching with your loved one at Frick Park is an excellent way to spend a warmer winter day. With easily navigable pathways that make up some of the 644 acres the park has to offer, you and your loved one can explore the park in new ways during the winter months. For those who love the cold weather and snow, be sure to bring some chairs and blankets to cozy up in while sitting near the sledding hills, and watching the sledders have a blast in the snow!

Take a Lap!

One of the best winter ways to spend some time with your loved one without leaving the cozy confines of our amazing senior residence is to take a lap around our grounds. Make it a group activity and ask another resident or two to join you and your loved one in your mini-adventure. It’s a great way for residents to bond, and for you to learn a little more about our amazing community members!

This winter, try one of our out-of-the-box ideas to bring smiles to you and your loved one’s faces.
