For so many of us, retirement is a time that we can kick back, relax, travel, and enjoy downtime. One of the best things about retirement, in our opinion, is to spend some of that time discovering new talents and hobbies. There’s something truly wonderful about lifelong learning, and retirement is a great time to learn something new! Not only is it a good way to spend time, but it’s also a great way to give your mind exercise. Learning a new skill is an excellent tool to strengthen or maintain cognitive function!
At Sunshine Retirement Living, we love to encourage all of our residents, especially those in our independent living communities to try out new activities and hobbies. We offer our residents plenty of community activities that can spark a new hobby like art and board games to pinochle or even yoga! For those looking to try something on their own, we’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite hobbies to try in your retirement years. Check out our list below!
Rising in popularity over the last few years, birdwatching is a wonderful hobby to pick up as a senior. Not only can you identify different birds from sight alone, but you can also learn specific bird calls to identify the birds without even seeing them! While nature trails are the obvious choice for birdwatching, you can even go birding in your own neighborhood. Take a stroll, set a timer, and grab a pencil and paper to record how many local species or visitors in the transitional seasons you can spot in that time. Better still, bring a friend and make it a group activity! Between the mental stimulation, the social aspect, and the walking, this could easily become your next favorite hobby!
A classic choice for a reason, crafting is a great way to get your creative juices flowing! So many people find crafting such an ideal hobby because you can actually see the output of your efforts in the crafts you make. Knitting, sewing, painting, and crocheting are all classic examples of crafting, but we like to encourage our residents to think outside of the box. Dried floral arranging is an excellent option to create something beautiful and long-lasting. Or consider taking up beading and creating some gorgeous jewelry for yourself or others!
There is something so rewarding about making others laugh. If you have the gift of gab, or have excellent motor skills, you can experiment with different types of comedy! Those who love to tell stories can try their hand at stand-up comedy. If you love physical comedy, consider taking an acting or improv class! Not only are these great opportunities to learn a new skill and hone a talent, but they offer you a fantastic chance to meet new people and socialize!
One of the most beautiful art forms, photography offers the artist a chance to share their view of the world with others in such a unique way. From landscapes to cityscapes, portraits of people you love to wildlife portraiture, there are so many different subjects to choose from on any given day. The great thing about this hobby is that you can get as technical as you want! With modern-day cell phones often having high-quality cameras, anyone can take a great shot! If you want to take your photography to another level, you can experiment with different editing apps on your phone or computer. And if you want to go all in, you can invest in a quality camera for a relatively reasonable price. The beauty of this hobby is that almost anyone can pick it up, and you can take it as far as you want!
With so many great hobbies out there, it can be hard to even know where to start. We hope our list helps inspire you and narrow down the choices for you!
