While New England is known for its beautiful snowy winters and crisp fall days ripe for apple picking, Massachusetts is truly a summer lover’s paradise. With miles and miles of beaches, warm sunny days, and plenty of outdoor activities, there’s never a dull moment during the summer.
At our retirement communities in Massachusetts, we have plenty of amazing summer activities for our residents to enjoy–many of which take place in our beautiful outdoor common areas. For those looking to take a little day trip, or even a weekend trip outside of our community, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite summer activities and staycation destinations. Check them out below!
Known for its history and spooky Halloween spirit, Salem is ripe with amazing shops, restaurants, walking tours and more. But one of our favorite options for out-of-the-box ideas for exploring Salem is going on a harbor tour. Located at the Salem Ferry Dock are Boston Harbor Cruises, and several other nautical options can be found in the area as well. Take your loved one on a cruise around the harbor, and scope out the amazing Salem and Massachusetts sights from a whole new vantage point!
Open every Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from June through October is the Methuen Farmers Market at the Nevins Memorial Library. Fill up on seasonal produce and goodies on your walk around the market, and bring home some of your favorite fruits and vegetables to create the summer menu of your dreams. Sometimes an adventurous escape from the daily routine can be as simple as taking your loved one to a new location and exploring their favorite flavors together.
What would a list about summer weekend escapes in Massachusetts be without Cape Cod on the list? Truly a fun destination all year round, we all know that summer is the time that the Cape shines the most. Pack up the family in the car and hit the road for a midweek or weekend adventure across the Bourne or Sagamore Bridges, and get ready to sample a taste of the legendary vacation destination. While most may venture to well known beach towns like Hyannis in the Mid-Cape or Truro and Wellfleet in the Outer Cape, we suggest making a visit to the lesser known but equally as beautiful and quaint towns.
Brewster, located on the bay side of the Cape is a quiet, but large town offering peaceful nature hikes, easy access to the bay, and our favorite summer stop, the Brewster General Store. During the summer you can also check out Orleans and spend time in their amazing freshwater ponds like Pilgrim Lake and Deep Pond – which are a great and safer alternative to the crashing (and chilly) waves of the Atlantic! Regardless of where you wind up on the Cape, be sure to enjoy a delicious summer treat by the beach! Just be sure to watch out for those pesky and sneaky seagulls–they’ve been known to snatch a hot dog right out of your hand!
There’s truly no shortage of fun day or multi-day staycation ideas in Massachusetts this summer. From the beaches of the Cape to perusing the local farmers market, you’re in store for an incredible summer of making memories with your loved ones.
