If you’d like to try some activities on your own or with your loved one, check out some of our great suggestions below!

Meditate

The sound of falling rain is calming for so many, and if you play your cards right, can aid in meditation. One of the very best activities for a rainy day is meditation. Whether solo or with a friend or two, taking some time out of your day to sit, focus on your breathing, and reset your mind and body can be incredibly beneficial. Not only is it good for your mental health, but meditation can reduce your stress levels, meaning better brain, heart, and gut health! Try an app like Calm or Headspace to get yourself started on your meditation practice!

Sculpting

There’s something so satisfying about working with clay and creating a beautiful piece of art you can have forever. While it might be difficult to find a kiln for traditional pottery, consider using an air-dry clay. These clays have similar properties to traditional clays, but they do not require the use of high heat to set the clay. Instead, set the clay out to dry over the course of a few days. Spend some time with your loved one molding some clay into a beautiful bowl, plate, or even a bit of abstract art. Not only is it a great creative outlet, but it’s also a good exercise for the dexterity of the hands!

Word Games

There’s a reason so many people take up word games like crossword puzzles, word searches, and other games like the New York Times’ Wordle, Connections, or Spelling Bee. They are excellent social games for those who like quiet activities. An afternoon spent with your loved one working on a crossword puzzle or word game can help with bonding, and strengthening social ties. As an added plus, word games are also excellent for cognitive function!

Group Games

When rainy days mean everyone is cooped up, a group game is exactly what is needed! Gather the crew together and get silly! Not only are these games great for socialization, but they can sometimes be fun exercise as well, both your brain and your body! Get physical with games like Heads Up or Charades. Exercise your mind with Scattergories, Telestrations, Taboo, Trivial Pursuit, or one of our favorites, Really Loud Librarians!

So the next time the weather has you cooped up inside, try out one of these ideas! We’re certain they’ll turn a rainy, blue day into a great time!
