Self Care Tips for Winter for Our Independent Living Communities
Prioritize self care this winter with these simple tips
One of the best ways to stay healthy this winter is by taking care of yourself. There’s the obvious ways, eating well, exercising, and journaling, but what are some other ways you can incorporate self-care into your daily routine?
Our first time is a fun one! Starting small, incorporate a little mental activity into your daily routine. Whether it’s a daily crossword or word search, or perhaps even blocking off a few minutes each morning or evening to read, taking a little time each day to stimulate your mind is an important way to keep yourself active and healthy.
Breathwork and Meditation
With apps like Headspace and Calm and in-person group meditations becoming more common, meditation is something everyone can, and should, do! For newbies, we suggest starting out with a simple breathing exercise to help your concentration. The most common and easiest to master is the 4-7-8 exercise. During this exercise, start by breathing in for the count of four, holding for the count of seven, and then exhaling for the count of eight. The point is to concentrate on your breath to release thoughts and distractions from your mind during the exercise. We also love a good body scan, in which you go from head to toe releasing any tension from each body part. You can find further great suggestions in this article by MindWorks.
There’s an incredibly calming effect that scent has on our nervous system. It is a memory keeper, a comfort giver, and a de-stresser. Aromatherapy is the practice of using scent to calm the amygdala, which is the portion of the brain that controls emotion. Tapping into the emotional center with comforting scents that remind us of happier times. Consider buying some essential oils in scents that remind you of happy times to evoke wonderful memories, or perhaps calming scents like lavender or chamomile, which will bring a little peace to your day. Or if you’re looking for a little invigoration, consider using a citrus based scent or peppermint to awaken your senses!
Truly the most important self-care tip is prioritizing your sleep. Sleep is the way our body can heal itself, from reducing stress to getting sick less often to staying at a healthier weight, it allows your body adequate rest to recuperate. Good sleep hygiene is important. Start by implementing a routine. Waking up and going to sleep at the same time every day is an excellent way to get better and more quality rest. Also make your sleeping area as peaceful as possible. Remove excess light, noise, and distractions from your sleeping space to ensure your sleep is uninterrupted and high quality.
