Stay Active this Summer in our 55+ Communities in Oregon

Fun and essential exercise tips you’ll want to try!

With the summer months comes amazing weather and the chance to get outside for your daily exercise! After months of being stuck inside for our workouts, whether at home or in the gym, there’s nothing like getting out and experiencing the beautiful sunny days while doing some of our favorite workouts.

Whether part of our senior living communities in Oregon or a friend outside of our community, we think you’ll love some of our best tips for staying active this summer. From trying a new exercise to simple tips for making the most of your movement, we have compiled some essential tips for you to try this season.

Let out your inner child

There’s something so fun about childhood activities like jumping rope, hopscotch, and hula hooping. Not only are they all great physical exercise, but the nostalgia and silliness of some of these activities can bring such laughter and happiness – which is a huge boon for mental health! For those looking to jump rope, we suggest using a cordless weighted jump rope to avoid tripping over the rope. This option is also great for those who want to avoid jumping and only work out their core and arms. Hopscotch is great for those with good balance, and hula hooping is a unique way to work the core!

Take care of your body

It may seem simple, but when you’re spending so much time outside exercising, it can be easy to forget the simplest of self-care tips. As a quick reminder, be sure to do the following when exercising outdoors:

  • Wear sunscreen! Taking care of your skin is not just about looks, but it also is important to keep you from more serious ailments like sun poisoning or severe sunburn, and even melanoma.
  • Stay hydrated. Bring a big water bottle with you whenever you’re outside. Regardless of temperature, when you work out, you heat up and when you heat up you sweat. It’s important to drink water throughout your workout.
  • Listen to your body! One of the most important parts of your workout is paying attention to how your body feels. Take a moment to assess how your body is feeling and distinguish if you’re feeling general soreness from a tough workout, or if it’s actual pain. If it’s actual pain, stop, rest, and speak with your doctor.
  • Rest when you need it. Take breaks in between your workouts. This downtime is imperative to help you assess how you’re feeling, and decide if a specific exercise is for you.

Bring a buddy

Sure it’s nice to spend some time to yourself, and alone time is something many of us need to help us rest and recharge. But when the weather is nice and you want to go for a walk, there are excellent benefits to working out with a friend. Social workouts encourage camaraderie, bonding, and genuinely bring a smile to your face. It’s also an excellent way to hold yourself accountable and to make that walk every day. It’s easy to cancel on yourself when you’re not feeling up to it, but it’s much harder to cancel on a friend.

This season, we hope you take some of our essential tips with you on your workout. And if you have any interest in learning more about the workouts and exercise classes or groups you can find in our senior apartments in Oregon, give us a call.
