As summer approaches, it’s tempting to get outside and spend all your days basking in the sunshine! Orange County, California has an abundance of clear skies and sunny days. Here at Park View Estates Assisted Living and Memory Care, we want our residents to enjoy being outside, but we also want your loved ones to stay safe. Keep reading to find out our recommendations for having a safe and enjoyable summer!

Hydrate

Whether you’re heading outside by yourself or assisting a loved one in enjoying the sun’s rays, don’t forget the importance of staying properly hydrated. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t necessarily feel thirsty, can make a big difference in keeping the effects of dehydration at bay. Wondering how much water you should drink? As a general guideline, we recommend roughly one-third of your body weight in ounces of water per day. As you spend time outdoors, be cognizant of the signs of dehydration and take action early. These signs may include dry mouth, tiredness, darker colored urine, and feeling light-headed. Stay safe by always keeping a water bottle nearby!

Wear the Right Clothing

Now that you know the importance of hydration and have your water bottle handy, let’s discuss what types of clothing and accessories can keep you or your loved one safe while spending time in the sun. First and foremost, don’t forget your sunscreen before heading outdoors on your adventures. For your clothing choices, be sure to wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing that’s breathable. This helps you stay cool and helps regulate your body temperature. Wearing light clothing reflects the sunlight, whereas darker colors absorb it, leaving your loved one feeling extra hot! Some other accessories that can help you stay cool and shaded are hats and sunglasses. In general, prioritize comfortable clothing that you can move in that doesn’t weigh you down. This way, you can make the most of your summer activities!

Bring the Fun Inside

On the extra warm days, it may be safest to avoid being outside altogether, or at least for more than just a few minutes. We know that the idea of staying inside on a beautiful sunny day may not be what your loved one had in mind this summer, but if you’re creative there are lots of fun things to do in the comfort of an air-conditioned room! Try a new summer-themed recipe with your loved one, crack open a new book you’ve been looking forward to reading, watch a movie with friends, or participate in an arts and crafts project. You can encourage your loved one to open the curtains to still let the summer light in, while staying comfortable and safe inside. If you really get the itch to leave your home or room, take precautions by going outside in the mornings or evenings, before the hottest times of the day.

There’s truly nothing like California in the summertime. We know your loved one is eager to get outside and enjoy making new summer memories! At Park View Estates, your health and safety is our top priority. While we want nothing more than for you to enjoy yourself outdoors, we also want you to be prepared! We hope these recommendations for staying cool this summer have helped you, and we hope you implement them so you can have your best summer yet.
