For so many, summer is a time for rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation. But climbing temperatures and sweltering heat can really get the best of even the biggest sunny day fans. At Woodland Creek Memory Care Community, our residents enjoy access to many great hot weather activities, both indoor and out! From ice cream socials to spending time in our amazing spa, we have plenty of activities to keep your loved one cool in the summer heat.
Though perhaps you are looking for ways to spend some special quality time with your loved one this summer, or even keep cool on your own. We have come up with some of our favorite fun and also practical tips for staying cool. Check out our must-dos below!
While not all of us have access to a private swimming pool or even a public pool, it’s easy to set up a kiddie pool for the day and let out your inner child. Safer than a regular pool with more control over water levels, a kiddie pool offers a chance to cool off in the warm weather by dipping in your toes, or even getting straight in and staying there until the sun sets. With fresh water, plenty of sunscreen, and even a lawn chair or two in the pool, you can stay cool with very little effort in the comfort of your own backyard. For an added bit of fun, set up a sprinkler near the pool to shower down on the happy pool-goers!
There’s nothing like an ice cold popsicle on a hot day. But with health in mind, we think it’s better (and more fun) to make our own! Talk to your loved one about their favorite fruits and flavors, take a quick shopping trip, and get mixing! Some of our favorite flavor combinations can be found in this recipe from Jessica Gavin, Culinary Scientist. Not only is it a healthier alternative to store bought, but making and freezing your own popsicles with your loved one is an excellent way to spend quality time together and enjoy some cool treats in a few hours!
While outdoor activities are usually the preference in summer, there are some days that are just too darn hot to be outside. Usher in a movie day, complete with classic summer movies, theater concession stand inspired snacks, and plenty of laughs. Pop a bowl of homemade popcorn, serve up some topping options like parmesan cheese, cinnamon and sugar, or paprika for a little kick, and pop in a movie or two. Spend some time chatting about the movie afterward with your loved one. Pretend you are movie critics and share your favorite or least favorite parts and decide whether the movie deserves two thumbs up! If you repeat the activity throughout the summer, keep a running list of the movies you’ve watched and the reactions, and look back at the end of the summer to see what your summer movie rankings are!
While not quite as fun as the other suggestions, it’s vitally important that you spend a few minutes preparing your home for summer. This means cleaning or replacing air filters in your air conditioners or air purifiers, cleaning the blades of your ceiling fans or standalone fans, and ensuring your freezer is clean, free of frost build-up, and ready to be stocked with cool treats and ice packs. Though practical can be boring, it can also save lives when the temperatures reach sweltering heights!
