After the cold, short days of winter (and possibly some over-indulgence in treats during the season), spring is a welcome change. From the cold weather to the lack of sunshine, many people start to experience the “winter blues,” and spring is the perfect time to kick them to the curb! We know our residents at The Gardens at Brook Ridge want to stay physically and mentally fit this season, so that’s why we’ve compiled a list of our best tips to stay healthy this spring.
Our first tip is to get outside and go for a walk when the weather permits. Even if it’s a little chilly or cloudy (as unpredictable spring weather can be), a quick walk can do wonders! A daily walk has so many benefits, you may not even be aware of all of them. Walking can improve your heart health, strengthen your bones and muscles, improve your memory and mood, and strengthen your immune system. If you can, try to walk outside for the added fresh air and natural vitamin D boost. If you can’t make it outside, grab a buddy for a treadmill chat or a walk around the community.
One of the best ways we can stay healthy is to take some preventative measures. Taking daily vitamins helps us build up our immune systems and improve our overall health before anything tries to attack our body. We recommend vitamins C, B12, D, calcium, magnesium, and zinc. You usually can find one supplement that has calcium, magnesium, and zinc all together. Each of these has unique benefits that support your physical, mental, and emotional health. That’s why they are crucial during the changing weather! Remember to always consult with your doctor on what vitamins and supplements you should and should not be taking.
Rather than thinking about what you need to eliminate from your diet, think about what you can add. You can always add more vegetables, dress them up, or drink them! If eating veggies isn’t your thing, you could reach for smoothie ingredients or pick up a green juice. If regular old lettuce sounds boring, we don’t blame you. You can head to the grocery store to pick up “salad toppers,” which are bags of delicious additions like dried cranberries, nuts, and chopped bacon to spruce up your spring salad!
It’s easy to forget that we need to stay hydrated when it’s not super-hot outside, but it’s still extremely important. Our bodies need half our weight in ounces of water each day. For example, if you’re 150 pounds, you’ll need 75 ounces of water per day. One of the best ways to jump-start your day is to drink 16-24 ounces first thing in the morning when you wake up. This is so helpful because of how dehydrated we become while we sleep.
Our last tip is to surround yourself with people you love. Calling up a friend or family member can immediately elevate your mood and make for a great day. Better yet, grab a friend to make smoothies do your daily walks with! Being an active member of your community is helpful to not only your emotional health but the people around you as well.
We love to see our residents being active community members and making healthy choices in their lives. If you want to learn more about our Rio Grande memory care community, The Gardens at Brook Ridge, give us a call or schedule a tour today!
