Winter in Colorado is absolutely beautiful, from the snow-covered mountains to the snowfall to the charm of the towns and cities. While there is no denying that this is one of the best times of the year in Colorado, it can be hard to keep your loved ones and you active or to avoid snacking on too many unhealthy (but delicious!) treats.
That is why at Belleview Heights Memory Care and Transitional Assisted Living, we’ve got you covered. Our incredible team will not only assist our residents with any dietary and health related needs while living at our luxury community, but they have also come up with three tips on how to keep you and your loved ones healthy during the cold winter months.
The first tip on our list is what most of you would know as “meal prep.” While our incredible chefs provide 24/7 delicious and nutritious meals that focus on the MIND diet (a research-backed, brain-healthy diet), there are still times your loved ones crave a snack or something not provided on the menu. This is when prepping healthy, satisfying, and filling options comes into play. Most people crave one of two things when a hankering for a snack happens – either sweet or salty. It is easy to want to go for a bag of chips, or a pre-packaged cookie, but these are not the best choices when it comes to keeping our minds and bodies fueled. We recommend picking a few items from the list below to prepare ahead of time for when those cravings call.

This is another one of our top recommendations when it comes to keeping your body and mind healthy during the colder months. Because of the chill outside, it can be really easy for your loved one to spend a lot of time indoors and slowing down. While we can’t promise that getting outside will be easy, we do recommend making use of our wonderful amenities and have your loved one get some movement each day. Daily exercise can not only help improve muscle strength and endurance, but can also reduce risk of injury, improve cognition, and improve overall mood. Here at Belleview Heights, we offer a wide array of weekly exercise classes, and encourage all of our residents to take part in them! On the days your loved one might not want to participate, or is unable, we recommend trying these indoor exercises instead:
Our third and final recommendation for staying healthy this season might sound straightforward, but is often overlooked. Drinking enough water is something that most Americans struggle with on a daily basis. Add the additional factor of being mostly sedentary during the winter months, and it is even easier to overlook the fact that your body needs ample water to function properly. Drinking enough water can help with your bodily functions, maintain a healthy weight, aid in digestion, and promote healthy brain function! A good rule of thumb when determining how much water you or your loved one should drink is 1/2 – 1 oz per pound of weight. For someone who weighs 150 lbs, that would equate to 75 to 150 oz of water per day.
Our entire staff is excited to help your loved ones have a wonderful and healthy winter season, and will assist our residents in any way we can.
