Tips for a Healthy Winter for Retirement Communities in Ohio

This winter, be sure to carve out a little time for your health! It’s easy to get distracted by the crisper weather, fun trips, New year’s resolutions, and plenty of time with loved ones – but taking care of your mind and body should land a top spot on your list of this season’s priorities.

At Sage Park Memory Care community near Columbus, OH, we encourage everyone in our community to take charge of their health and sneak in some healthy habits into their daily routine. See below for some of our easy tips for a healthy winter from our Columbus Ohio retirement community!

Taste the Seasonal Flavors

The winter months often bring about comforting flavors like apple cider, nutmeg, and pumpkin-spiced goodness in the form of delectable treats, but did you know that there are some awesome health benefits to some of the coziest flavors of the season?

Cinnamon often evokes memories of winter, fresh baked goods, and piled-high pancakes, but did you know that it also can help to regulate blood sugar? Sprinkle a little in your morning oatmeal for a healthy boost. Or try it on a bowl of freshly popped popcorn for a fun and healthy twist on the snack to share with friends during movie night. Or check out one of these cinnamon infused baked dishes recommended by Taste of Home.

Sick of pumpkin, but love squash? Acorn squash to the rescue! Packed with folate, calcium, and magnesium, this nutty squash is both rich in flavor and nutrients – in particular antioxidants! This squash can also boast being the most nutrient rich of all the squashes, so use this tasty gourd as a substitute for any squash-based dish! Might we suggest this vegetarian option?

Flu prevention all around

Cold and flu season is in full swing, and that means taking extra precautions to stay healthy. At Sage Park, we use air filtration systems and frequent cleaning and sanitizing schedules to ensure the health of our residents. But we also encourage you to wash your hands frequently, stay hydrated, eat plenty of nutritious foods, and of course, stay home if you’re not feeling well. All of these measures can help keep you from getting sick this season, and help prevent any illness from spreading to others.

Move Your Body

When the temperature dips, it’s easy to want to stay in bed or curl up on the couch, but both your immune system and mental health can really benefit from exercise! Outdoor adventurers can take a brisk walk around the block or a park for 30 minutes a few times each week to keep the heart healthy and the mind sharp. For those who prefer the great indoors, it’s easy to keep movement in your daily routine. Simply stretching out your arms and legs every morning and before bed for ten minutes can make a huge difference. Try adding some overhead side stretches and seated leg lifts to increase your flexibility and mobility and give you those amazing endorphins – the happiness hormone! Check out some of these moves from Silver Sneakers. To add a layer of accountability, challenge a friend to a month-long contest to see who sticks with their morning stretches!

At Sage Park, we know there are unique things to love about every season, and we want our residents to enjoy them to the fullest! We are so happy to share these helpful tips with our Gahanna senior center, and those who love us.
