With summer bringing longer days and warm weather well into the night, evenings are the perfect time to unwind with friends and family or settle into a cozy routine that gets you ready for incredible sleep. From night owls to early birds, everyone can find the perfect summer night activity.
At Sunshine Retirement Living, we encourage you to make the most of your retirement by living your life by your own rules –with a nod to safety of course! If that means you want to go for an evening walk to fit your daily exercise in as the sun sets or stay up for a movie night with friends, we are all for it! So check out some of our favorite nighttime activities. We’re sure you’ll find something you love!
Perfect for winding down and stretching out after a day of activity, we love a simple evening yoga session. If you have the flexibility, we suggest spending some time going from cat to cow pose. This requires getting on the floor on your hands and knees and gently arching your head down and your back rounded up like a frightened cat and moving into cow pose, in which you drop your belly low to the ground, lifting your shoulders and your rear end up to align and look your head up to the sky –very much like a cow! We also love the child’s pose, in which you sit on your folded legs with your knees spread and your arms stretched out in front of you reaching out on the ground. Think of this pose as folding your body and bowing down. Lastly, we suggest going into Savasana. This pose has you lying on your back, arms and palms to your sides facing up, and allowing your entire body to completely relax into the floor. This is exceptionally great for releasing tension in your body to prepare you for bed. You can check out some of these poses here in Yoga Journal!
If you’re a social butterfly and nothing gets you going more than quality time with friends, consider hosting an outdoor game night! Provide plenty of snacks – healthy options like veggies and hummus, stuffed pitas, and fruit salad are all top-tier snacks –and gather your friends for a rousing night of board games or group games. Start a Scrabble tournament, or bring together a large group for a game of Apples to Apples. Or perhaps you love games like bocce ball or cornhole and want to set up some competitions in a communal outdoor space! Coming together for a night of friendly competition and delicious snacks is an excellent way to socialize and spend time outdoors.
We love a good dance session, and there’s something really special about spending the evening dancing to your favorite tunes. Whether you’re a total beginner and can’t keep a beat or a seasoned pro, dancing is an activity that absolutely anyone can enjoy. Swaying to music is an excellent form of exercise, and listening to music can have a huge positive impact on your mood as well as cognitive function! So turn up some of your old favorites, gather some people in your community, and teach each other some of your best moves! You’re bound to have a delightful time!
While light pollution and poor eyesight can make this activity a little harder, if you’re in a location with limited light and your eyesight is still in okay shape, gather around in some comfy chairs, wrap up in blankets, and see how many constellations and planets you can find! Consider bringing a smartphone with an app like Night Sky or Stellarium, which will use GPS to navigate where you are and highlight where specific constellations are in relation to you!
There are so many great ways to spend summer evenings, and we hope we inspired you to try out some of these great options!
