August Wellness at Sunshine: A Month of Healthy Living

August Wellness at Sunshine: A Month of Healthy Living

sunshine-wellness-and-goodness

Well•ness – noun, the state of being in good health, especially as an actively pursued goal.

At Sunshine Retirement Living, senior wellness is more than just a buzzword. Each August, our communities devote the entire month to embracing healthy living for seniors, making Wellness Month a focal point of our year. This year marked the 6th Annual Wellness Month, and our 26 communities kicked off the celebration on August 1.

Throughout August, residents engaged in four wellness categories—Get Informed, Get Fit, Get Restored, and Give Back—with lessons, activities, and events led by local professionals. Here’s a quick look at how our residents enjoyed each theme:

Get Informed

We live in a world of ever-changing health information—from exercise trends to new treatments. Learning about these innovations keeps us on track for retirement community wellness. Some highlights include:

  • Seminars on Nutrition, Hydration, Exercise & Joints, and Eye Care
  • Blood Pressure Screenings and Hearing Checks
  • Health & Wellness Fairs

Get Fit

Starting (or restarting) a fitness journey can be daunting, but setting realistic goals and tracking progress can make it fun and sustainable. Residents often team up for accountability and try new activities like:

  • Line Dancing and Arthur Murray Dance School
  • Bocce Ball and Chair Yoga
  • Healthy Happy Hours, Smoothie Socials, and Waterfall Hikes
  • Senior Olympics, featuring Balloon Volleyball, Bean Bag Baseball, and Wii Bowling

Communities such as The Continental in Austin, Texas, and Deer Park in Novato, California, hosted friendly Senior Olympics competitions. Residents were energized by camaraderie, laughter, and the thrill of a little healthy rivalry.

Get Restored

A balanced life also involves relaxation and self-care. August’s restorative activities helped residents unwind and replenish their minds and bodies through:

  • Spa Treatments, Massages, and Foot Soaks
  • Aromatherapy and Essential Oils
  • Mary Kay Facials

Give Back

Volunteering is rewarding for both the giver and the receiver—lifting spirits and fostering a sense of purpose. This year’s Give Back initiatives included:

  • A Rock-A-Thon Fundraiser
  • Cookie Decorating and Thank-You Cards for Local Police and Fire Departments
  • Rummage Sales

Residents received a Wellness Calendar and a Wellness Stamp Card to track their attendance at various events. As the month wrapped up, most communities hosted a Wellness Awards Ceremony to recognize everyone’s efforts. The resident with the most stamps on their card at each community received a $50 Visa Gift Card customized to their interests.

August may be ending, but Wellness Month has become so popular that many residents continue these healthy living for seniors habits all year.
