Here at Central Parke Memory Care and Transitional Assisted Living, we take extra care to ensure our residents are not only cared for by our incredible staff, but also encourage residents and their families to take a few minutes out of their day to practice self-care. Self-care can look different to everyone, but our main priority is making sure that you and your loved ones have the tools and support you need to incorporate steps that better your mental and physical health every day. And what better time to incorporate new daily routines than in the spring? Keep reading for our top five self-care recommendations for residents at our Ohio memory care communities.
When you hear the term self-care, one of the first things that often comes to mind is taking better care of your skin and body. While an extensive skincare routine is not necessary, skincare in general is a great way to start your morning and nighttime routine off in a relaxing way. This is also a great step during the changing seasons to help regulate the skin, preventing any dryness or irritation as the weather changes. While there are tons of skincare routines, we highly recommend starting with the basics:
If you do decide to add any new products to your or your loved one’s routine, be sure to consult your primary care doctor beforehand to prevent any potential reactions with others.
Next, a wonderful and easy self-care practice is to intentionally spend more time outside connecting with nature. Not only has spending time outside been proven to promote a healthy lifestyle, but it can also be very relaxing and even be used as a form of mindfulness. Mindfulness is the practice of bringing your attention to the present moment. This is a great way to relax and focus your thoughts which is great for any stressful or long days. Additionally spending time outside has been shown to improve mood. Be sure that if you choose to incorporate additional time outdoors into your or your loved one’s self-care routine you wear proper sun protective gear and SPF.
Reading is a great way to exercise your brain and is also a great way to reduce stress and anxiety. Getting lost in the pages of a book is a wonderful way to wind down at the end of the day making it the perfect step to add to your nighttime routine. For those avid readers, a great way to double up on your self-care is to read in nature. Luckily for our residents, Central Parke has incredible outdoor spaces that our residents can utilize on those beautiful Ohio spring days!
Finally, incorporate movement into your or your loved one’s daily routine. Exercise has been proven to help reduce the risk of chronic illness as well as help improve mobility. It can also be very relaxing and has been shown to improve mood. A few great ways to get you or your loved ones moving this spring include enjoying a nature walk, participating in dance classes or activities, trying out light bodyweight exercises, or even walking when shopping! Exercise doesn’t have to be complicated, but is a great way to help improve your and your loved one’s self-care.
We love helping our residents try new hobbies and look forward to helping them incorporate new steps into their daily routines for better self-care this spring!
