There’s something so satisfying about sitting along the shoreline with a good, easy reading book in your hands. Or even curling up with a cup of tea, a big blanket, and listening to the rain come down on your porch with a great story just waiting to be read. It’s no wonder that reading is a popular activity for all ages!

At Central Parke Memory Care and Transitional Assisted Living, we love encouraging reading among our residents. Not only is reading a great pastime, but it is also great for keeping the mind sharp! We’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite newer reads that are perfect for a relaxing afternoon or right before bed. Check them out below!

Circe by Madeline Miller

This incredible story is a take on the myth of Circe, the daughter of the Green sun god, Helios. It chronicles her life, exile from the land of the gods to a small island, and her many adventures along the way. Melding beautiful writing with mythology and excellent storytelling, this book is destined to be a favorite of anyone who reads it. While a bit heartbreaking, the underlying theme is women empowerment, which is something we can all get behind!

The Five-Star Weekend by Elin Hilderbrand

Beloved author Elin Hilderbrand brings this sharp, romantic, contemporary fiction book to life and it is said to be her last. This book tells the story of a food blogger who is going through grief after the loss of her husband and joins her close friends for a weekend on the Massachusetts island of Nantucket. Relatable and full of tugs at the heartstrings, The Five-Star Weekend is definitely one to read this summer!

Portrait of an Unknown Woman by Daniel Silva

We’d be remiss if we didn’t include a thriller on this list, and what better book to include than a book by contemporary thriller writer, Daniel Silva? Mixing spies with art dealers, the 22nd book in the Gabriel Allon series can be read as a standalone, but if you’re a fan of the series, now’s your chance to get caught up!

Tom Lake by Ann Patchett

Patchett’s latest novel is an intergenerational story about young love, choices that can alter our paths, and reminiscing. Beautifully written and incredibly life-like, this story offers a peek into the lives of our parents and the lives they had before they were parents. A stirring reminder of the humanness of our hero-like parents, this book is a must-read for anyone and everyone.

World of Wonders by Aimee Nezhukumatathil

We had to include a memoir in the list, and this memoir was an instant classic. Nezhukumatathil explores nature’s most glorious wonders like fireflies, peacocks, the touch-me-not plant, and axolotls and relates them back to her childhood and her children’s childhoods. Her writing is pure poetry, and each chapter can stand alone making this book the perfect one to read all summer long or in just one sitting.

With so many incredible books out there, it’s hard to pick just a handful, but we hope you have drawn some inspiration from our list. Whether checking these out from the library, enjoying an audio book, or even an e-reader, we’re certain these books will satiate your literary taste buds!
