The benefits of walking are seemingly endless: improving your heart health, maintaining a healthy weight, and strengthening your bones and muscles are just a few of them. At each of our Texas senior retirement communities, we know how important it is to stay active in a way that makes the most sense for you or your loved one. Fortunately walking, even if it’s for a short distance, is accessible to many of our residents. We wanted to share some amazing walking trails near our Texas communities in both Austin and Pharr, Texas!

Twin Falls and Sculpture Falls in Austin

Taking a walk down the Twin Falls and Sculpture Falls trail in Austin is a great idea if you’re looking for a chance to interact with other walkers, hikers, runners and even dogs! It’s a fantastic place to walk along the riverbed and admire the waterfalls. The entire route is a little over three miles with occasional change in type of terrain. It’s important to be careful and know your level of comfortability on this trail. If you’re lucky, you’ll see some fun wildlife like lizards and colorful butterflies!

Homestead Trail in Austin

Homestead Trail is another excellent walking trail in Austin and is made up of a wide gravel-paved pathway. This is an amazing opportunity to view the Lower McKinney Falls. Though it is a bit windy, you’ll likely have the chance to see some wildlife on this path as well. If you’re extremely quiet, you might even see a white-tailed deer!

Arroyo Colorado Trail in Harlingen

The Arroyo Colorado Trail in Harlingen, a short distance away from Pharr, will give you and your loved one an easy-going and enjoyable walking experience. This trail is a total of 1.8 miles of paved path. You’ll start your walk at the family-friendly C.B. Wood Park and then make your way through the trail, passing a 40-acre nature reserve known as Harlingen Thicket. This walking trail will give you and your loved one the perfect opportunity to take in and truly observe the beautiful Texas scenery and nature.

Historic Battlefield Trail in Brownsville

Take a short drive from Pharr and you’ll find yourself in Brownsville, which is home to the amazing Historic Battlefield Trail. While this trail is quite the excursion with a full distance of 10 miles, you can cover as little or as much of the trail as you are able. This paved trail runs through the Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park. This area was the location of the first battle of the Mexican-American War. Believe it or not, this trail is actually just a small part that connects hundreds of additional trails for walkers and bikers. It also includes many areas to stop, with benches and water fountains interspersed throughout.

At each of our Texas Retirement Communities, we offer a variety of activities to allow you and your loved one to be as active and physically fit as possible. However, we know you might be interested in seeing some new sights and getting in some steps on new trails! We hope these walking trails and paths have given you some inspiration.
