Cleaning

While no one wants to hear that regular cleaning is a necessity, it really is – especially when dealing with allergens. Removing dust, dander, and pollen particles can ensure the air you or your loved one is breathing is clean and clear, giving your lungs the chance to breathe easily in a clean, healthy space. We suggest cleaning your home from the very top to the bottom to ensure any dust kicked up settles on the ground and can easily be mopped up with a wet cloth or mop. Start by vacuuming, then dusting, and then finally cleaning with a wet cloth and a mop.

Air Purifiers

HEPA filters (high-efficiency particulate air) are a surefire way to ensure the air you are breathing in your home is clean and as free from allergens as possible. Did you know that a HEPA standard air purifier can remove at least 99.7% of all air particulates? An excellent tool for avoiding dust, dander, mold spores, pollen, and yes, even illness, having an air purifier in your home or your loved one’s space is truly an act of kindness for your body. If your loved one doesn’t have an air purifier, we suggest taking a look at this list from the New York Times.

Preventative Medications

Initiating your use of medications before your allergies begin is one of the most effective ways to handle allergy symptoms. This means working with your doctor to pick out the right allergy medication for you, as well as starting your allergy medication about two to four weeks before your typical allergy window crops up. In order to time them properly, it helps to know a) what types of pollen aggravate your allergies, and b) where we are in allergy season. You can track the pollen seasons for your specific allergy in your area. Then, start taking your medication before the season hits, in order to get your body working with the antihistamines and other symptom-fighters within your medication. You can read more about timing your allergy medications properly in this article from the Allergy & Asthma Network.

Allergy Shots

For those of us with allergies that are truly unbearable, we recommend asking your doctor about allergy shots! Beneficial for people with asthma or who might get anaphylaxis from seasonal allergies, immunotherapy shots can help lessen the symptoms of your allergies over time. Working with your body to microdose the allergen, this option is one that needs to be discussed with your doctor at length. Remember, only your doctor and you can decide the right treatment plan for seasonal allergies!

Fighting seasonal allergies, and more importantly, preventing seasonal allergies, is possible with just a few of the tricks we have listed above. However, we’d be remiss if we didn’t remind you one more time to consult your doctor before starting allergy medications or seeking out allergy shots!
