As the weather starts to warm up in Ohio, it’s the perfect time for our 55-plus communities to start thinking about fun and engaging outdoor activities to stay active. After a long winter, it’s important to get outside for some fresh air and sunshine and move your body. Here are six warm-weather activities we think you should give a try. Who knows, you might find your new favorite pastime!
Walking is an excellent way to stay active, and it’s low-impact and gentle on the joints. A walking club is a great way to get outside and enjoy the sunshine with others while getting some exercise. Many of our Ohio senior living communities offer walking clubs on a regular basis. Check the activities calendar to see when yours happens. Walking also makes for quite a social outing! Catch up on what your neighbors and friends have been up to while enjoying the outdoors. Walking with others is a great way to stay motivated and to make new friends in your community, too!
Gardening is not only a great way to stay active, but it’s also good for your mental health. Being outside, getting your hands dirty, and watching plants grow can be very therapeutic. Working in the garden allows you to connect with nature, which has been shown to have a positive impact on your brain. Community gardens are great because you get to work together to plant and maintain growth. Lowering your stress levels is a great way to live a healthier, longer life. Gardening also provides exercise! Through tasks such as digging, planting, weeding, and watering, you will feel like you got a workout in!
Swimming is an excellent form of exercise that is low-impact and easy on the joints. Many local gyms and recreation centers have pools available for use, and swimming is a great way to stay cool on those, especially warm spring days. Swimming provides a full-body workout and can help improve cardiovascular health, muscle strength, and flexibility. Plus, who doesn’t love a relaxing dip in the pool?! We’ll even take an ice-cold lemonade while we’re at it.
When we say “stay active” you might think of just moving your body but keeping your mind active and fit is equally as important! A great way to do this is to take a class at the Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Garden! They’ve got incredibly unique classes from building a mushroom terrarium to fruit tart 101. You could take a beautiful walk around the garden and end your day with an exciting class! Let us know how it is–we’re a little jealous we won’t be making it to every single one of these educational events!
Someone reading this is very happy we’ve included golf on this list. But we can’t deny the health benefits that going golfing really has! Golf is already a popular activity among many of our residents, and Ohio has no shortage of golf courses. Golf provides a low-impact form of exercise and helps improve cardiovascular health, muscle strength, and flexibility. Gather a few other residents and organize group outings to play together! Enjoy the fresh air and soak up the sun as you take your time on the course.
Outdoor games such as bocce ball, horseshoes, or pickleball are great way to stay active and have fun with friends. Grab a group, a game, and head outside to enjoy a sunny afternoon! All of our locations organize outdoor activities like bean bag baseball or indoor activities like Wii Fitness for those rainy spring days.
Hopefully, we’ve inspired you to get outdoors, activate your mind and body, and enjoy any type of spring day whether rain or shine. Maybe you’ll try something new! Whichever you choose, remember to check your location’s activity calendar and get involved. You’ll see the benefits both physically and mentally. We’re wishing you a very active, healthy, and happy season!
