What to Eat in Charleston, South Carolina

Best Food to Eat in Charleston

When you travel to a new location, you want to eat as the locals do. If you are going to Charleston, South Carolina, you are in luck. Southern cuisine is among the best in the country.

Here are the places you must eat when traveling to Charleston.

Halls Chophouse
Halls is the most highly-rated restaurant in Charleston, and after reading the reviews, you can understand why. Make your reservations early if you want to attend the Gospel Choir Brunch on Sunday mornings. You will enjoy an abundant southern-style brunch while listening to (you guessed it!) a gospel choir.

Although reviewers liked everything from the steak to the lamb chops to the hamburgers, they also enjoyed the more southern-specific dishes. Reviewers raved about she-crab soup, shrimp and grits, lobster mac and cheese, and cream corn. Save room for Hall’s decadent chocolate cake for dessert.

For the most part, visitors were impressed with the service at this elegant restaurant but expect to pay for this quality.

167 Raw
This tiny restaurant receives big praises, but you may have to wait a while for a table since they do not take reservations.

167 Raw is the to-go place for seafood in Charleston. Reviewers were quick to brag on their lobster roll, scallops, and ceviche. One of the biggest draws to the restaurant, of course, is their expertly-staffed oyster bar.

Don’t worry if you aren’t a seafood lover. The po’ boy sandwich is served on bread that was described as “buttery and crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle.”

The CODfather Proper Fish and Chips
Although the name may have you rolling your eyes, reviewers claim that this place serves the best fish and chips outside of England. Sure, the restaurant is not much to look at with one reviewer even calling it a “hole in the wall.” And the bar only offers beer and wine. But visitors describe the fish and chips as some of the best they have ever eaten.

Apparently, you should also order a side of mashed peas to go with your meal. This sounds crazy to me, but “when in Charleston”(or maybe we should say “when in London . . . “).

Lewis Barbecue
Have you noticed people from different regions of the country claiming to have the best barbecue? Kansas City, Memphis, and all the cities in Texas argue that their restaurants serve the best in the country, but perhaps Charleston should be in the running as well.

Consider visiting Lewis Barbecue next time you are in Charleston.

Many reviewers are happy to give Lewis Barbecue five stars. They rave over the hot grits, green chile corn pudding, mac and cheese, and of course, the BBQ. One reviewer mentioned that the owner worked with Franklin’s BBQ in Texas to perfect the cuisine.

Are you hungry? If you are visiting Charleston, you have a lot of options for great restaurants to visit. If you are vacationing in the area, make sure you try local seafood, grits, and she-crab soup.
