BEACHWOOD, OHIO (April 5th, 2019) – A traditional memory care model includes highly educated and skillfully trained leaders supported by a variety of support staff with substantially less training: cooks, housekeepers, dietary aides, and nurse aides. But one Cleveland memory care facility is working to lead the industry in resident-focused change by ensuring that the staff who spend the most time working directly with residents are experts in their fields.
One direct support professional said, “I’m really glad that I’ve chosen to share my talents here. Because they provide such extensive training, I really feel like this company wants me to understand my residents…to really connect with them and improve their quality of life through my work. When I meet new people seeking memory care in Cleveland, I’m always proud to share that I work at Windsor Heights and I definitely recommend they schedule a tour.”
All new caregivers complete the Meaningful Moments program upon hire. The Meaningful Moments program prepares caregivers for the daily challenges their residents face as they experience impaired cogitation and the other signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s dementia (and other forms of dementia). This program focuses on all aspects of memory care, including resident safety, mental health, emotional needs, spiritual needs, and medical needs.
Also among the training available for caregivers and other staff at Windsor Heights is the renowned Teepa Snow video training series. This training series was developed by Teepa Snow, an Occupational Therapist who has dedicated her personal and professional life to better understanding the needs of patients suffering from dementia. Her Positive Approach to Care is a patient-centered approach that assists caregivers in identifying the pain points a resident is experiencing and provide comfortable, effective care in challenging moments.
Windsor Heights doesn’t stop there; bimonthly training on updated research, best practices, and policies is required for all staff to ensure that the most up-to-date recommendations are implemented and in practice within the community. An additional resource – Relias – provides continuing education for staff at all levels.
Executive Director of Windsor Heights, Michelle Ledford says this about their training program: “We have believed from the very start that training has a direct and measurable impact on resident outcomes. Our hiring process is very selective – ensuring only the best join us – and our unique training program gives them the confidence they need to provide truly resident-focused care that promotes the well-being of the whole person.”
Despite leading their peers in organization-wide training, Windsor Heights has no plans to stop seeking innovative opportunities to build the skill sets of their staff. “For us, it’s about continuously improving. Always looking for ways we can do better for those who trust us with their care, ” says Michelle Ledford.
