While summer is coming to a close in the next month, we all know there are plenty of hot days ahead of us. Indian summer is right around the corner, and we’ve all been surprised when the humidity spikes in the middle of September! This is why it is important to remain vigilant of heat, even as the summer is ending.
At Juniper Glen Memory Care Assisted Living in the Buffalo NY area, our residents benefit from a knowledgeable staff who put their safety and care at the forefront of all they do. Our wonderful team has compiled a list of tips for staying safe on warmer days for both you as a caregiver and your loved ones in our care. Read on for our top tips!
In order to be able to assess the weather, it is important to understand what the heat index is. The heat index is the feeling of heat when you combine the actual air temperature and the humidity. When the heat index is on the high side, we are more prone to sunburn, dehydration, and heat stroke. This makes it dangerous for anyone, especially the extremely young and senior populations, to spend time outdoors. Instead, try spending time at a cooling center or in your personal space, and enjoy simple activities like reading, painting, games with friends, or even a little television time!
When the heat index is high, it’s important to stay inside. But when you’re craving nature it can be incredibly tempting to sneak out and soak up the sun. While we encourage you and your loved ones to spend as much time in nature as possible, we suggest doing it early in the morning, or later in the evening on particularly hot days. During the daytime, as the temperatures reach uncomfortable levels, consider bringing the outdoors in! Sit close to a shaded window for some much-needed views of green and sky blue. Tend to your indoor gardens, or consider potting some new plants if you don’t have any! Use aromatherapy to awaken your senses and sniff specialty scents like fresh-cut grass, salt air, and lavender while meditating and envisioning yourself surrounded by nature.
It’s so important to stay hydrated in the sun! Even if you’re in the pool or sitting still, your body processes water and sweats it out faster both in the heat and during exercise than at rest or in the cold. While hydration is important all year round, consider increasing your hydrating fluids intake when you are in the sun. Carry a large refillable water bottle with you and eat plenty of fresh fruit like watermelon or peaches, or veggies like cucumbers, which are all known for their high water content. It’s also a great idea to add electrolyte packets to your water for an extra boost. However, be mindful of your sodium and sugar intake!
When the warmth of summer carries through to the fall, it’s important to be mindful of the temperatures and the effects they have on your body. While everyone handles heat differently, there are definite temperatures that are even dangerous for the most heat-friendly human. Remember to play it safe and stay hydrated, and mindful, and do things that will help you pass the time indoors.
